Do sikh people take a shower?
I know this might be a stupid question, but just as there are loads of rumours or misconceptions about Islam, I think there are also loads about other religions.
I just wanted to find out how true this "rumour" is. I've heard it from a few of my friends who said that Sikhs don't take a shower because they believe God created them and they are not allowed to change the way God created them. Apparently that's also why they don't cut their hair or shave.
Is this ture? If yes, can you give a sensible reason for that? I mean that is just nasty in my opinion.
If not, I apologize for it and will confront my friends about it as well.
I can't really ask any, because I don't know any PROPER sikhs. And anyway I doubt it in this country (UK) they would openly say "I haven't taken a shower since I was born".
@Steel Boy: Its not that I believe everything. If I believed everything would I ask this question? Moron! I just wanted to know up to what extent that is true.

Im a Sikh. What you have heard is not true.
But a small % of fanatic Sikhs ( like Steelboy ) never cut their hair, but keep it wrapped in about 6 - 9 metres of cloth called a turban. Since they cant wash and tie their hair at the same time, they wash their hair once a week. This is a topic of ridicule amongst moderate Sikhs too, and their are plenty of jokes on this. Maybe some talk like this got distorted into a rumour which you then heard.

Sikhs are supposed to shower daily when they wake up but the majority only take a shower about once every sikh months which explains why they smell so bad

Lots of Sikhs respond that they bathe regularly. OK- Then why do the turban wearing, bearded guys at 7-11 smell so terrible?

sikhs have to take a shower everyday. the sikh guru's promoted hygiene very strictly. strict sikhs have to take a shower twice a day, comb their hair twice a day, keep their hands clean, nails cut, and wash their hands before and after using anything. sikhs who do not take a shower are not even supposed to be allowed in a gurudwara. back in the days, sikhs who didn't take showers were ignored, and not even looked at. :/
we keep our hair because it is apart of our identity, our uniform, we are a warrior religion.
we don't believe keeping our hair means we accept the way god created us, otherwise we wouldn't be told to keep our bodies fit and ready for battle. and we wouldn't be able to cut our nails. we wear our turban because it is our pride, honor, and a reminder of the sacrifices made by our brothers and sisters. it is also a reminder for us to always do what's right.

Well I'm a Sikh and I take a shower ATLEAST once a day. In fact we are supposed to shower before we go to temple, and after that wash our hands before praying.

There are several kind of foolish people, one who can not think and others who believe others without thinking. There is plenty of material available if you wanted to know. 'Foolish people do not have horns' is an idiom in Punjabi and that is fully applicable on you.
