dont know much about investing, only about $4000 however, I would like to take some risk

I would recommend TDAmeritrade.  They have over a 100 Exchange Traded Funds(ETF's) that you can invest in commission free.  You can also sell them commission free as long as you hold them for at least 30 days.  ETF's are basically index funds that invest in anything from bonds, small caps, large caps, to oil, gold, whatever.  This is the best deal in all the brokerages I've dealt with.  Roll it over to an IRA with them, and make sure you get enrolled into the commssion free ETF trade program.
