are those "complete album" tours getting old to anyone else?

as far as I can tell, this is a relatively new thing (or rather, it has suddenly become much more popular), where the band tours and plays either their latest, or their "classic" album in it's entirety, sometimes following it up with a more varied set of their other work. I thought this was awesome at first. A chance to see a band play their entire album in order live? that's awesome, right?

but these days, I just let out a soft groan when I see it. Honestly I'd rather just see a varied set with some of the bands classics, and some of their less "classic" songs from throughout their career.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

is it a new thing for so many bands to do this or was I just out of the loop before?

I really know where you're coming from. I've seen quite a few of those 'complete album' concerts and barring a few of the real classic ones, such as Patti Smith's ''Horses'', The Stooges' ''Fun House'', Spiritualized's 'Ladie's And Gentlemen...' and Public Enemy's ''It Takes A Nation Of Millions'', they do become quite tedious because they're no surprises what will come next in their set. I've found myself thinking '' let's get the next two songs out of the way'' because i'm waiting for a certain song to be played. That being said, i'm going to see The Flaming Lips play ''The Soft Bulletin'' in July, which i am certainly looking forward to, but to be honest i'd rather they played a varied set like what you described.

These sets have been around quite a while now, the Patti Smith ''Horses'' concert i attended was in 2005.

    Hey...good to see you!

We don't get a ton of shows here so I can't speak about these shows from experience, but I can see where you're coming from. It might be a cool idea if it was a certain band playing a certain album (no specific examples of this are leaping to mind) but I can see how it would get old pretty quickly.

On paper it kind of seems like a cop out, doesn't it? Like they are either not creative enough or too lazy to come up with a set list with a bit more variety.

I have not yet seen one of these tours. Amon Amarth is supposed to be going to Seattle and doing a show where they do their normal set and then their whole new album, but unfortunately, I won't be able to see it as I am on the other side of the state for school.

I think that it would be cool to see with certain albums or whatnot. For example, I think Carach Angren's Death Came Through a Phantom Ship would be pretty wicked to see as a whole piece because it's a concept album and the songs really flow into one another.

I think it would depend on the band and the album. If Radiohead did a tour playing "The Bends" or "Ok Computer" I would be super stoked. I think bands that write great songs and don't just find their niche and write the same song 12 times can pull it off. However, I would want to see Radiohead play more than just songs off of those 2 albums if I did see them. I think I would enjoy it either way. Depends on the band.

Funny you mention this because I was just recently reading about a band (I wish I could remember who it was) that was going on tour and playing 3 of their entire albums! I thought to myself that would be kind of anticlimatic and boring.

One of the reasons that I love about going to a concert is not knowing what will happen or what song will be played next.

I also never understood why fans would want to know a band's setlist before going to a concert, unless it was to see if they were playing songs that you wanted to hear AND it was before buying the tickets .

Most songs are filler now days that's why your so let down

I can't wait until these classic rockers finally retire and we can be spared the sight (and ticket price inflation) of them touring.
