Is it plagiarism if I list a series of brain structures?
I'm wondering whether or not I need to provide direct quotes when rattling off a series of brain structures in a paper. For example, if I'm paraphrasing from a direct source that lists, "the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and caudate nucleus" do I need to put quotes around those items and list the page number? Would switching the order take care of the problem?
4 AntwortenHomework Helpvor 7 JahrenIs it necessary to take advanced math and computer science to get into a psych PhD program?
I am currently a junior neuroscience/psychology double-major at a small liberal arts college. I have been researching graduate school requirements and several sources have suggested that applicants have a background in computer science and math. I'm wondering if this is completely necessary and whether it will really make or break me as an applicant. I have taken a variety of natural science and psych courses (Gen Chem 1 and 2, Human Biology, Principles of Bio II, Biopsych, Cognitive Neuroscience, statistics, research methods and a plethora of psych courses). Additionally, I plan to take Biological Neuroscience, Molecular Genetics and Human Physiology before I graduate. Would it be a good idea to work in a calculus and computer science course? Is coursework that important or does it depend more on GPA, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and research experience?

Once I graduate I will have a BS in Neuroscience and a BS in Environmental Science with a minor in Psychology. I know it varies from state to state (I currently live in Iowa), but I'm wondering if how one gets the necessary hours of experience/training and how much of that will be covered by my degree. I have taken general, developmental, abnormal, social, biological, and cognitive psych, in addition to cognitive neuroscience, biological neuroscience, human biology, sociology and a ton of natural science courses. I also have 5 years of experience working with people that have intellectual disabilities. I'm just wondering what other steps I will have to take to become certified. I'm also wondering if the salary range online is correct (37 - 61K/year)? I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

My 2 y/o has had an intense cough that has spanned 3 months. It has fluctuated. It started out really bad, along with cold symptoms for about 3 weeks. It then improved, but the cough remained and now it has gotten worse again. It's a pretty horrible cough. She coughs until she throws up sometimes, and sounds like she has been smoking for 10 years. Neither my fiancee or I smoke. We've taken her to the doctor many times. They just keep telling us that its allergies, or it's a virus and then prescribe us anti-biotics because they do not know that I'm aware that anti-biotics do not work for viral infections. They have also told us to give her allergy medication, which has done nothing. Is there anyone out there who can explain to me what's going on? I am a neuroscience major, so feel free to use some detail as I have a biology/chemistry background. Would an air purifier help? At this point I'm desperate. Not only is my daughter up all night coughing her lungs out, but my fiancee and I are severely sleep deprived as well. Thanks!

When I was in my early twenties, I attended 3 different community colleges over a span of about 5 years and failed a lot of classes, ran up college loans, and essentially wrecked my future. I suffered from generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and alcoholism. Then I got older, sought therapy, quit drinking, got married and had a child. I still have some anxiety, but it is manageable. In the fall I returned to community college, determined and responsible, and have gotten straight A's for an entire year (4 classes/semester, 2 semesters). I am now ready to transfer to a four year college, but I'm terrified of my past. I have applied to a few schools already. One accepted me and replaced the old grades with the ones I have retaken, another seems to want to figure the failing grades into my overall GPA. The school I was accepted to does not offer the major I am seeking, the one that offers the major I want won't replace the old grades and has a super high tuition. My question is, would it help to explain that I was diagnosed with those disorders in my past and have since gotten them under control? Or is that an "excuse." I have heard that it's not good to make excuses.
1 AntwortHigher Education (University +)vor 8 JahrenShould I go to a state research university or a liberal arts college?
I am trying to decide where I should finish my BS. Currently Iowa State University, Simpson College, Rockhurst University, and St. Ambrose University are my choices. I am wanting to get into a clinical psychology graduate (preferably PhD) program. I have heard conflicting information from various sources regarding whether I should go to a major research university or a small liberal arts school; some say better research at major universities and some say more PhD's come from liberal arts colleges. I want to major in neuroscience, because I want my concentration to be clinical neuropsychology in grad school. Simpson and St. Ambrose have neuroscience programs. Iowa State does not; however, I've heard that there will be better research opportunities, with better known professors at a research university. On the other hand, ISU does not have a neuroscience program, and has much more rigid major requirements. I would major in psychology, but there is no minor that satisfies the other course work I need (chem, bio, physics, calc, etc), and because of the strict major, there's no room for these other classes. It seems that I would have to sacrifice coursework to attend ISU. On the other hand, Simpson offers the flexibility to take the courses I need, but has a very small research lab with only an EEG, rather than an fMRI. I have not visited the other schools, but Rockhurst has offered a hefty scholarship. I'm leaning towards Simpson, but I just want to know if I have a shot at a PhD program if I go to a small liberal arts school, or if I'd be better off at Iowa State.
1 AntwortHigher Education (University +)vor 8 JahrenWhat constitutes medical experience when applying towards a physician's assistant program?
I have worked for nearly 5 years as a direct support staff for individuals that have intellectual and physical disabilities. I was a certified medication aid (not required where I work now) for 3 years, and have done things such as take blood pressure, assist with bathing, applied ointments, given meds, etc. Would this count as medical experience when applying to a physician's assistant program? I want to go into psychiatric medicine, so it would seem intuitive that working in the mental health field would be good experience, but I'm not sure that these programs consider what you wish your concentration to be.
6 AntwortenHealth Carevor 8 JahrenShould I double major if I want to get into a doctoral neuroscience program?
I'm about to transfer to Iowa State University to finish my undergrad and I'm wondering what path I should take if I want to get into a neuroscience doctoral program. I was contemplating doing a double major in Psychology/Biology, but some people have told me that a double major is usually done for bragging rights. If I don't do a double major, would it be better to major in Psych and minor in Biology, or vice versa? Or would another combination entirely be better? Also, is calculus a must for getting into a good neuroscience program? The biology major at ISU has a minimum requirement of either a year of calculus or a year of statistics or a semester of each. Would a year of stats suffice for grad school, or should I get a tutor and tackle calculus. I would love to learn calculus, simply because it opens so many doors; however, I would need a full summer of tutoring to get caught up and I have to take stats this summer, so I figured it would be difficult to take stats while working through advanced algebra and pre-calc at the same time. I'm sure most of you are thinking, "Isn't this what an advisor is for?" I just want as many opinions as possible to ensure that I'm taking the best route that I can. Thanks! I appreciate any suggestions. : )
1 AntwortHigher Education (University +)vor 8 JahrenIs a landlord required to return your security deposit if your apartment is condemned?
My apartment has been nothing but problematic since I moved in. It was filthy when we moved in, the oven was growing mold spores, and shot black smoke into the air every time it was turned on...subsequently causing the smoke alarm to go off. So I expressed my concern to the landlord and he gave me $50 off of my second month's rent. When I asked about the oven, the maintenance man scoffed and told me he'd drop off some oven cleaner. So I go to use the oven cleaner and it shoots hazardous fumes into the air(keep in mind I have a 5 month old). I read the warning and opened my windows, but the fumes were still pungent. The landlord has finally agreed to replace the oven, but I'm concerned about the other potential health hazards within this apartment. So my fiancee and I are considering contacting the city health inspector. My first question is, if the place is dubbed unlivable by the housing inspector, do I get my deposit back? Secondly, are their any further actions I can take against the landlord due to the negligence that has occurred?

My fiancee has to bounce our baby on an exercise ball for 15 - 20 mins everytime we want her to sleep. 1 AntwortDesktopsvor 1 JahrzehntHow should I talk to my friend with severe abandonment issues?
My best friend was an adopted child who's life has been full of grief. His adopted mother died of cancer when he was a child. His adopted dad rejected him, got a new family, and he then came to live with me for a while, but his behavior and refusal to obey rules was such that my parents' couldn't handle having him live with us. The next place he lived had similar results. He then met his biological mother, and got close to her, only to lose her to cancer.
He genuinely believes that the world is a dark, terrible place full of people who can't be trusted. I try to get him to see that it's not so bad. I try being positive. I try being empathetic and understanding, but it ends up him just turning it around and feeling like I'm telling him that there's something wrong with him. He accepts no responsibility for his actions, it's everyone else' fault...always, and I understand why he thinks that. I just don't know how to deal with it. Can anyone help me with this?

I started eating super healthy(vegan high fiber/low fat diet) about 2 months ago. The first 2 weeks I lost 10 lbs. Two months later I'm 9 lbs less than when I started, so Ive actually gained a pound. I do yoga 3 - 4 times/week and do circuits(6 cycles of a 30 second sprint and 2 minute casual ride) on an exercise bike 2 -3 times/week. My clothes are fitting looser, my stomach appears to be shrinking, and I feel lighter overall, but I still weigh 193 lbs and I dont feel like that's a healthy weight for being 5' 9". I would like to get down to 175. I seem to be building muscle, but given the nature of my workouts, I dont see why. What can I do to actually lose pounds, not build muscle?

I've been on SSRI meds for 10 + years and I'm ready to get off of them. I've been slowly weening off, cutting down about 10% every 2 weeks, but recently I've started to feel slight withdrawal symptoms(fatigue, increased irritability, slight disconnected feeling). I read online that choline, lecithin, and B vitamins can help with the side effects.
