    Hello,

"Animals are more in touch with nature" - I just... I want to take a moment to just let that sink in for a moment. Okay, got it.

If your asking "Are animals self aware?" to the point that they understand mortality the same way that the human animals do, I would have to say no. I don't really know the answer but I don't believe so. It's not that I believe they think they are immortal but the idea that they can rationalize or contemplate death, I just don't see it. It would be amazing for some proof otherwise but until then that's my view on it. The self preservation, fight or flight we see in animals (even ourselves) has to do with protecting the species more so than it has to do with protecting the individual at a base biological level.

I remember something I saw on The Onion (Fake News Network) about this very topic this question made me think of it.

Humans are animals too. Some of us do, some of us don't. Some other animals know they are going to die. Cats know when they're going to die -- that's when they leave the house to find a quiet spot. Dog owners report that their dogs, too, know when the end is near. The terror outside slaughterhouses is widespread, but in cows and sheep more than chicken.

It depends on who you are.

Yes, otherwise they would not run away from predators. By the way, do you know that some animals like cows and elephants mourn their dead? Elephants actually crowd around the dead for a few minutes (some with tears) before they move on. Weird...

animals are more touched with nature. they feel extra something about natural happening. about 24 hours their behavior is changed. so the animal knows that one day they will also die.

I don´t think we will ever know the answer to that question. It seems that they know they can die, they seem to unserstand the concept of death. Some of them mourn their lost loved ones if you like but I don´t know if they are ever aware of the inevitability of death. I don´t know how we could ever find that out.

I think in some ways they do. Animals are in touch with nature, life and death and its cycles. In many ways, I think they do and we have much to learn about them as so of ourselves.
