Why is a generic form of Plavix sold in Canada but not in the U.S.?

Currently, there is no generic Plavix available in the US. The earliest expected date for a generic version to come to market November 2011. There used to be a generic in the US, but it was pulled because it was ruled that the generic company infringed on Plavix's patent. Patent's protect a company's right to exclusively market a product without any competition. Plavix's patent should run out at the end of next year. You'll be seeing generics pop up around then.

Patents are based upon individual countries. It is possible to obtain generic drugs from Canada. In fact it is possible to obtain generic drugs from a variety of countries around the world. In theory they should be as good as the brand name but not all countries verify potency of generic drugs so some caution is warranted. JR
