What does "make that call" mean? Natives only please?

I heard it time and time again... "she made that call", "it was hard for me to make that call", etc.

I've got a hunch it means something like "I get it, I can understand it", but I'm not sure.

Also, can I say "I made THE call" or do I have to say "I made THAT call"?

Can you please provide a few examples?

Thanks a lot.

As others have written, it means to make a decision, usually a difficult one with other implications or consequences (it probably comes from making a telephone call, probably a life-changing one).

We also say 'to call the shots' - meaning to make the decisions, to be in charge. 'shots' is always plural here, and the phrase probably comes from the military situation of calling out when the troops should fire their guns.

The difference between using 'the' and 'that' is more instinctive. However, 'I made the call' is usually followed by 'to'. For example, "I made the call to fire her, her work attitude was terrible."

'I made that call' is usually said on it's own, and when there is some distance (ether physical or emotional) between you and the choice that you made. For example, 'Do you want to get a tattoo?' 'No, 10 years ago I made that call and I have regretted it ever since.'

Hope that helps and that it isn't too long/complicated an explanation!

Yep - agree with Sara. Usually used when the best choice between 2 or more options seems subtle or hard to determine.

'make that call' in US english means - make a choice

It means to make a decision.

the examples you submitted here can be translated in two ways: literally - to make a phone call; metaphoric - to make a decision regarding one thing... (hard decisions, who can, sometimes have unexpected turn-overs)
