odd grafted cactus question Please read?

Question

my mom has a grafted cactus <a little red cactus ball on top of a green cactus> well the red part died and now almost over night the green part has three arm looking things that grew out of it and it looks like its starting to grow an appendage on one of the arms. My sister and  I think it looks cool but my mom hates it.

Is this normal? Why is it happening? Will it keep growing like this? Thanks in advance

The top cactus had no chlorophyll, so produced no food for itself, it depended on the bottom cactus to supply it...as long as the top cactus was alive it was taking energy from the bottom cactus so kept the bottom cactus from creating branches, once the top dies, the energy was spent creating branches on the bottom cactus..yes this is normal after the top cactus has died and yes it will keep growing like that
