What are american school sports like?

Please only answers from people who know exactly know or experienced it.

Is there a such thing as a subject "sports" or "P.E." in High School and College?
And, if yes, do the pupils decide, "oh, i want to do swimming" or "i am good at soccer" and do one or two sports only or are different types of sports randomly played by ALL of the students?

What happens if you aren"t good at sports, but only good at one particular type of sports?
Could you also not do any sports?

Please write with your answer, from where you know or which school you visited, please.

Can I read online articles on that subject?

well im in high school..
the sports are divided into seasons
like soccer is in the winter.
tennis is in the fall
swimming is in spring

so if you like those sports you can choose them as a class, usually the last one, and then switch at the end of the season if you want to join another sport.
when the season is over and you decide to stay in the same sport, you just pretty much practice. or if you dont wan to go to another sport but you dont want to stay in the one you are, you could choose to take P.E. so basically, athletics are taken in place of P.E. and you can switch sports every season.

College isn't mandatory, but for some high schools it is. I went to a private high school and I needed 2 p.e credits to graduate. The first one was all textbook and no physical work, but the second was called "Individual & Duel Sports" which was learning how to play games with 1 or 2 persons and it really wasn't that hard or extremely physical.
For my school I couldn't choose any specific sport, the teacher set up the curriculum.
