What do you consider to be "family values?"?

Question

I don't know about in other countries, but in America we hear a lot about "family values." Some politicians even make it a big point on their platform that they represent "family values" and will support them through legislation.

What I'm wondering is, what do family values mean to you? Part of the political divide in this country seems to be that people have very different ideas of what makes a good family. I'd like to hear your views.

There is an old saying, "You can chose your friends, but you can't choose your family." During my life I have met both closely knit families and also very dysfunctional ones whose members sometimes hated each other. My own wife and her sister are a case in point, they haven't spoken for at least ten years and probably never will again, in fact the feeling between them is so bad that should my wife die I would probably ban her sister from the funeral.

What politicians mean is probably that parents should bring their children up to be honest and hard working to help society, but as many parents are themselves dishonest and shiftless we would still have a divided society. When did you ever see a politician who lived in the real world?

Family values.  I can tell you what my family values are:
Prioritising family needs, such as health, financial, emotional and spiritual needs above work, personal interests and hobbies, when needed.
keeping up supportive and encouraging relationships.
Speaking the truth, honesty.
Maintaining close contact and family unity.

This is my ideal, but i'm still working on them and often fall very short.
