Why is the knowledge of the timing.....?
.....of the hilal, the crescent moon, so important for starting the Muslim holy month of fasting, Ramadan?
Why does Islam have such a fixation with the crescent moon symbol? (Mosques and other Islamic religious buildings have depictions of the crescent moon on their spires and pinnacles?, twelve Muslim nations go so far as to include this crescent moon symbol on their flag)
In ancient Syria and Canaan, the moon god was usually represented with the symbol of a crescent moon. Depictions of the moon god from Egypt, Persia, Ugarit, and Ras Shamra (in northern Syria) all include the crescent moon symbology intimately connected with the moon god. Why did this symbol find it's way into a monotheistic Religion?
Thanks, Mohammad for this verse from the Quran.
„The celebration of Christmas on December 25 was originally the pagan birthday of Mithras, the sun god, whose day of the week is still known as "Sunday."
(Early Christians did not celebrate the birth of Christ, and later on, the church chose to do so and picked this date simply because so many other religions and traditions used this date for a holiday.)
„Mithras was born in a cave, on December 25th, of a virgin mother.
(What we have handed down to us by those that worshipped him is that he emerged fully formed from a rock wall, carrying a torch, and wearing a cute little Phrygian hat but it is disingenuous to claim he was born of a virgin as there is no evidence
„He came from heaven to be born as a man, to redeem men from their sin. He was know as "Savior," "Son of God," "Redeemer," and "Lamb of God."
(When one looks at actual Mithraic literature these titles are nowhere to be found.
@Mohamad part 2
We have no evidence that the ancient followers of Mithra believed this about him)
„With twelve disciples he traveled far and wide as a teacher and illuminator of men.“
(The Persian Mithra had only a single companion called Varuna, while the Roman traditions records two, named Cautes and Cautopatres which were miniature versions of Mithra.)
„He was buried in a tomb from which he rose again from the dead -- an event celebrated yearly with much rejoicing.
( here are no evidences in Mithraic literature of Mithra ever being buried, let alone dying. And of course if there was no dying there was no resurrection to record either.)
His followers kept the Sabbath holy, holding sacramental feasts in remembrance of Him. The sacred meal of bread and water, or bread and wine, was symbolic of the body and blood of the sacred bull.
There are many other items of “borrowed” theology, but I think we’ve shown that their basis, as in the ones here, are nonsense.

يَسْـَلُونَكَ عَنِ الأَهِلَّةِ قُلْ هِىَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ
They ask you about the crescents. Say: "These are signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind and for the pilgrimage.''
(Quran 2:189)

It is a symbol about a miracle shown to Muslims during Muhammad's (peace be upon him, all praise to Allah) time and it is also a symbol of Islamic prophecy. The coming splitting of the moon by the comet/asteroid is associated with emergence of Mehdi and the eventual triumph of Islam.
Muslims do not worship the symbol, nor idolize it, it is just a mark of identification as Muslim, just as Christians use crosses and Jewish use the star.
