what is france like for racism?

i've been invited to move to france but i'm concerned because my daughter is half hindu. i've heard some pretty not-so-nice things about the way non-white and mixed ppl are treated even by officials (schoolteachers, police, govt, etc). i've been told they also forbid the wearing of religious symbols in public - she wears a bindi (little dot or jewel on her forehead). is that covered under religious symbols or is it more like crucifixes, star of david, hijab, etc?

ppl have told me france is a lovely country, very warm and welcoming - others have said they're that way for tourists, not so much for those seeking residency.

anybody have any hard facts to help me make the right decision?

Racism is rife in urban France - while it usually takes the form of Islamophobia, most French racists are so ignorant that they would not be aware of the difference between a Hindu and a Muslim. A different skin colour is enough for such people.

However, just as in most places, this is a working class vice for the most part - most ethnic minority members find little if any difficulty at university, for example.

The law on religious symbols applies in public buildings, not in town centres. Difficult to tell whether the average French teacher or front-of-house civil servant would regard a Hindu jewel as a religious symbol, though.

Quelle(n): My son-in-law has had racist symbols daubed on his office and vehicles for being a very declared equal opportunity employer, so there's a certain amount of personal knowledge behind what I've written.

"i've been told they also forbid the wearing of religious symbols in public "

In schools yes but I doubt anyone would complain.

I have been there a few times and loved it. Course I am white so no idea what it is like for an Indian halfy. I would suggest you try the French Yahoo Answers board to find better answers for this. Bottom of your screen.

PS I mean no disrespect by 'halfy' in case you wondered.

I recommend that she lives wherever it is they all have those dots on their faces and she'll fit right in. France is best left to the French (they are a strange lot).
