If people find their attics and basements scary, what makes them feel safe between these two areas?
except the floor and the ceiling...

I think Carolyn has it right. I think it's familiarity. Where I live now doesn't have a basement or attic (at least not that I have access to from my place), because I live in an apt.
But when I grew up in a house with a basement and attic, I found it creepy because it was dark and spiderwebs tend to form (especially in attics). Also, these areas tend to have tons of stuff crammed into them. It gives a feeling that anything could be "hiding" anywhere, no matter how irrational it might seem.

It appears that the science on this phenomenon has yet to catch up. We might test the hypothesis that the evil in the basement is grounded and thus carries a negative charge; while the evil in the attic is lighter and thus has a positive charge. By living right between these opposite charges, people reside in a neutral space where the negative evil cancels out the positive evil. The resulting neutrality feels safe. The real question, of course, is whether or not this neutral safe feeling is an illusion or whether one is actually in twice as much danger from both directions, yet ironically unaware of this.

If the attic is located in the top of the house and the basement is in the lowest part of the house -what is between these areas is the living areas of the house...the living room, kitchen and bedrooms. All are places of comfort, security, familiarity and happiness. These are the places that we spend the greatest part of our time with our family.

maybe because it feels somewhat suffocating to be in the basement and the attic and also because those places are usually dark and close-spaced...
so yea it makes some people uncomfortable...
and its safe in between because there's a larger amount of space and there's light...

The dog. The dog never goes up to the attic or down to the basement.
