Beltane Feast question?

I'm planning to hold our Beltane ritual and we always include a meal. This year the focus will be on the fiery aspects and I was thinking of serving spicy (but not TOO spicy) foods. Probably something along the lines of Mexican or Italian and looking for suggestions...

Update:

My decision to base it on fire is due to Beltane being a fire festival not any meterological events.

So, Keltasia, I read your question, loved it ! A true magickal sibling, a valid interesting question...then I read the comments like I usually do before posting. Hmm.. There were some good ones, others slightly irritating. They got a low rating. I digress.

Now let's make this what it's really about. You ! lol..Since ALL the greater sabbats are fire based kudos to you for the great idea, thanks. Wanna capture the spirit, howabout scrambled eggs with chorizo ? and the suggestion of chili is a great one. Mix it up; make black and white chili. If you like omit the chicken. Love the cinammon ice cream suggestion. That was good too.

Fried Johnny cakes with a mild chili verde sauce....I could go on forever.

Now that we've made this about you, I offer up my short rant. My apologies.

People, when are you going to learn that there IS no set of rules to magick. I am a true eclectic, ergo I totally reject two as one's premise that our asker not deviate from some particular belief system. If she wanted to serve spam and peanuts with store bought ginger ale for mead, that's her own darn business. Get over yourselves. Magick is superfulous and free flowing, or at least should be. That's why we, in my opinion all magickal persons, are better off than our RELIGIOUS counterparts. Her way is no less correct than Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Dianic, Teutonic, Santeria, Houdou, or what ever ! Let her do her thing. All she asked for were suggestions, not preaching. Leave that to the fundamentalists.

Keltashia, Blessed Be ! And may the universal light of love truth and peace be yours my sister. Merry Meet, and Merry Part !

Meade for the adults and/or other seasonal home made licquors as well. Remember that a friend with Meade is a friend indeed.

Also there are any number of foods that are appropriate for Beltaine.

This is not a time for choosing foods based on any meteorologic aspect of the season. It is the beginning of the fertility season. Fertility means many things; growth of family, finances and, naturally, fertility of the earth, crops and animals.

That is what Beltaine is really all about in Paganism; all Paganism. Cook foods that are specifically appropriate Beltaine.

    Here are some recommendations;

    Ham with Cream

    Corned Beef with Cabbage

    Honey glazed Chicken

    Partridges in Orange Sauce

    Wild duck with spiced oranges

    Oyster souffle

    Stewed Eel

    Fried Eel

    Baked Trout

    Mushrooms in Cream

    (anything with oysters)

    Bacchus Pudding

    Custard (yes, Custard)

    Porridge

    May Wreath Cake

    May Serpent Cake

    Oat Cakes (Bannocks)

    Tansy Pudding

    Steamed Orange Pudding

Those recipes and more can be found in "Celtic Folklore Cookbook".

Hope that those are a good start for you.

I can see the connection between Fire and Beltane. The spicy foods are a good idea for the feast, but also, just as you would light the red candle in the South during ritual.... you could focus the menu around red foods also. You could make a pot of Chili, or serve tomato based foods like lasagne or stuffed shells, and to tie in the fertility aspect of the Sabbat you could make red beet pickled eggs. Bright Blessings!! )O(

I've got a brilliant dessert for you. It's relatively cheap and easy too. Chili-Chocolate Ice-cream. It's YUM!!!. Buy yourself some really good quality vanilla ice-cream (or make it yourself if you can be bothered). Now the sauce... melt some good quality chocolate (milk or dark... it's up to you), and either put in some finely sliced red chili or half-teaspoon of dried chili flakes. Poor the sauce over the vanilla ice-cream.

It's not so fiery that it blows out your eardrums, but it does have a pleasant little tingle on the back of the palate.
