When does the suffix 'Jr' apply?

We are expecting twins (one boy and one girl) and have decided to name the boy after my father. Since we will be using both the first and middle names - will the suffix 'jr' apply even if the name skips a generation?

Jr ONLY applies if your son bears the name identical to yours.

This is where the improperly used II (second) comes in.

Many people feel that Jr is tacky even when used correctly so they decide to use II instead since they perceive that it's classier.

In actuality, II is used when there is a living male member of the family with the same name as in your case, skipping a generation.

You'll get some grief from people assuming you're a social climber but this is the case where II properly applies.

Of course, this presumes the name travels through the male line. If the child is named for the maternal grandfather, it doesn't matter because the surname is different.

    No. Don't believe so.

Knew a friend who was named after his father. The father was only referred to as suffix Sr. and the Jr was never applied.

Junior is used to distinguish a son with the same name as his father. 'II' is used whenever any close relative, including for example a grandfather or a great-uncle, shares the same name as the child.

this is the grater present a daughter can give to the family. it show the appreciation to the father and mother that suffer so much to bring the children up also to carry the families name for century’s to com. the Greeks people always do the same, and you can trace the family back. for the girl you should do the same, give you mother name. is the propped and right way.

Yep, you still use Jr. The second person with the same name is Jr, and the third is either Jr Jr or Billy Bob III

No, he would be John James Doe II.
