Any recommendations about sightseeing and things to do in Liege (Belgium)?
In a few weeks I will spend some days in Liege (Belgium).
Can you give me some recommendations about sightseeing and things to do in Liege? Also links to webpages (in English) would help me.
Perhaps I have time to visit for one day another city in the surroundings of Liege. Which city in Belgium or in Netherland would you recommend me to visit?
Thanks for your help!

As the most important tourist city in Wallonia, Liège has innumerable riches in store waiting to be discovered. The characteristic districts, the river Meuse, which transects from South to North, the abrupt and wooded hills surrounding it as well as its marked relief, providing a multitude of original perspectives give the city an exceptional charm.
A very current folklore kept alive by a positive-minded population, always ready for a feast, lively districts and a large number of restaurants all combine to make this an essential part of any trip to Belgium, not to mention its vigorous cultural and artistic life and a considerable architectural heritage.
The surrounding area also offers a vast array of options for walking and tourist visits.
If you have time, you certainly must go to Brussels, or even Antwerp, Ghent or Bruges.
From Liège, Brussels is abbout 100 km, Antwerp 150km, Ghent (175 km) and Bruges (200 km). All this cities are easy to travel with train.
Have some nice days!!!

If your interested in history of warfare, at least two important events happened in or near Liege.
The first, opening battle of the First World War was the battle of Liege. The German forces attacked the Liege fortress, and the battle lasted for 12 days until the Belgians surrendered.
The second was the opening battle of the Nazi offensive on the Low Countries and France in 1940. It is very significant because it was the first time when paratroopers were used in combat in a covert-ops mission to blow up the guns and bunkers of the Eben-Emael fort. It was also the first combat use of shaped-charge explosives.
The Eben Emael fort is on the road from Liege to Maastricht.

Liege is a beautiful part of Belgium. I was there last year but was visiting family so I didn't do alot of sightseeing. One thing we did see was the ARDENNES AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL. I was very moving to see thousands of little crosses for all the soldiers who gave their lives to save Belgium.
I would recommend driving through the beautiful countryside. THere are lots of small villages - Xos, Elle-Melle, Esneux, - go there and stop at a bakery. Enjoy!!!!
