I think that your transfur case broke. Fords are known to have to have the 4X4 systems serviced every 30K. That is something that you can probbly find in your owners manual. I'd consider taking the truck to a transmission shop for a more accurate investigation. What ever it is, good luck.

Is electric 4x4 or manual hub front?Its possible one or both front hubs are in need of maintenance and it kicked out the transfer case. These were a problem of that era. As above the best advice is to take it to an independent repair facility. Not a Ford dealer.

i have a 89 bronco 2 that had the same problem.. if you look under the truck on the transfer case you will see a small motor (looks like a power window motor) pull the three bolts or four im not shure disconnect the power supply buy unpluging it replace the motor with a new one and reinstall ...if you have any problems i have a used motor that works (i keep a spare) up for sale or trade tremme_74atyahoodotcom

my guess would be that the transfer case popped out of 4x4. Perhaps due to a lack of fluid in it.
