Why are light switches on the outside of bathrooms?

In some countries, light switches are on the outside. There are many reasons for this, i.e. isolation wasn't advanced back in the day and people wanted to minimize the exposure of electricity to humidity. This, of course, has changed, but there are still many places in the world where it's more common to have the light switch outside.

I'm looking forward to people's (hopefully reasonable) insights:)

There are still countries with the light switches on the outside of bathrooms for the reasons you have mentioned, the risk of electrical faults occurring. But now, I'm very pleased to say there are places where the light switches are INSIDE the bathroom. We have the light switch and an electric shower inside our bathroom so things are getting better.

Mine is on the outside of my bathroom but not the other bathroom. I hate it but after 20+ years I have gotten use to it. I think it was because there was a cabinet on the bathroom wall and there was no room for a switch.

It is to help prevent you touching the switch with a wet hand,

Here in the UK most bathrooms have a pull cord for the same reason.
