Can you be held for theft charges, with only one person's word against you?
An acquaintance of mine has been in jail almost 3 weeks. Her boyfriend claims she stole $5000 out of his apartment. She swears she didn't do it, and can't make bail. My question is, can they keep her simply because this guys says she did it? I would assume they need more evidence than that.

As to each - It's evidence, so yes they can.

Your assumption is wrong.
If there's evidence, they can charge her. If there's basis to assume she's a flight-risk, they can hold her.

Yes and no .
If he is an upstanding member of the community then they would take his word for it but he is not so i think they will need more evidence .
The police will also look at what he has to gain from doing this , have they had a fight .
Go and get some legal help this sounds wrong , you can get free legal help just ask .
