Help with Icelandic please?

Hi everyone, I recently heard this beautiful Icelandic song and I was wondering what the lyrics meant. All I know is that it's about an outlaw mother who had to throw her child into a waterfall, but sung this lullaby first. 

Sofðu unga ástin mín.
Úti regnið grætur.
Mamma geymir gullin þín,
gamla leggi og völuskrín.
Við skulum ekki vaka um dimmar nætur.

Það er margt sem myrkrið veit,
minn er hugur þungur.
Oft ég svarta sandinn leit
svíða grænan engireit.
Í jöklinum hljóða dauðadjúpar sprungur.

Sofðu lengi, sofðu rótt,
seint mun best að vakna.
Mæðan kenna mun þér fljótt,

Here is a translation:

Sleep my young love.
Outside the rain is crying.
Mommy keeps your gold,
old legs and toybox*.
Let us not stay awake at dark nights.

There is a lot that the dark knows,

I often saw the black sand
burn a green meadow.
In the glacier deathdeep crevasses cry out.

*Völuskrín is a small box where children used to keep things they played with, but at the time this song was written kids didn't have conventional toys like we know today and instead mostly played with stones and stuff they found in nature.
