how do i know what RAM chip to buy for my pc?
My pc is old and was 256 meg ram when i bought it, it has since had a second chip put in. now i wish to remove one of these chips and put in a 512meg chip to upgrade to 768meg of ram, but i do not know what chip to buy.
Is there any way my PC can tell me without opening it up before I buy it? or if i do need to open it up, what would I be looking for?

Go to http://www.memory-up.com/ and on the top there will be a green option saying Memory Scanner. Use that and it should tell you the RAM type you use.
