Surveyed scientists agree global warming is real
Story Highlights
Most earth scientists believe humans cause of global warming, according to survey
97 percent of climatologists canvassed believe humans play a role
Petroleum geologists and meteorologists were among the biggest doubters
(CNN) -- Human-induced global warming is real, according to a recent U.S. survey based on the opinions of 3,146 scientists. However there remains divisions between climatologists and scientists from other areas of earth sciences as to the extent of human responsibility.
Against a backdrop of harsh winter weather across much of North America and Europe, the concept of rising global temperatures might seem incongruous.
However the results of the investigation conducted at the end of 2008 reveal that vast majority of the Earth scientists surveyed agree that in the past 200-plus years, mean global temperatures have been rising and that human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures.
The study released today was conducted by academics from the University of Illinois, who used an online questionnaire of nine questions. The scientists approached were listed in the 2007 edition of the American Geological Institute's Directory of Geoscience Departments.
Two questions were key: Have mean global temperatures risen compared to pre-1800s levels, and has human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures?
About 90 percent of the scientists agreed with the first question and 82 percent the second.
The strongest consensus on the causes of global warming came from climatologists who are active in climate research, with 97 percent agreeing humans play a role.
Petroleum geologists and meteorologists were among the biggest doubters, with only 47 percent and 64 percent, respectively, believing in human involvement.
"The petroleum geologist response is not too surprising, but the meteorologists' is very interesting," said Peter Doran associate professor of earth and environmental sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and one of the survey's authors.
"Most members of the public think meteorologists know climate, but most of them actually study very short-term phenomenon."
However, Doran was not surprised by the near-unanimous agreement by climatologists.
"They're the ones who study and publish on climate science. So I guess the take-home message is, the more you know about the field of climate science, the more you're likely to believe in global warming and humankind's contribution to it.
"The debate on the authenticity of global warming and the role played by human activity is largely nonexistent among those who understand the nuances and scientific basis of long-term climate processes," said Doran.

If you want to win the debate, pick non-believer as it is the only side with science on its side. The other side has computer models, and we all know GIGO when we see it.
There is currently no evidence that man has made any significant contribution to climate change.
Some interesting facts.
1. During most of the past 2,000 years, the temp has been about the same or higher. Currently, we are barely over the average for the last 2,000 years.
http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2008/0...
2. During the medieval warm period (820 – 1040 AD), Greenland supported farming. Those areas previously farmed are now covered in glaciers. Obviously the melting and reformation of glaciers is a cyclical occurrence.
3. The earth experienced a little ice age which ended around the late 1860's or so. This is about the time man started recording temperatures. This would be like measuring a lake depth after a severe drought, then worrying about it flooding as it rose to normal levels.
4. The earth has been warming for the last 18,000 years, since the last major glacier time period. During this time frame, the glaciers have been melting at a fairly consistent rate. Also, for most of the last 1 billion years, the earth had NO glaciers or ice coverage.

5. The AGW theory states that CO2 is the primary driver of temperature. They arrived at this idea because they did not know of anything else which could cause it. But during the 70's and during the current decade, temperatures dropped while CO2 continued to rise. This means that natural occurrences are driving temp, not CO2.
6. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation and sun spots provides a much better correlation to earths' temperature than CO2 levels ever have.

7. Polar Bears are experiencing a population boom. Coke sales in the arctics are through the roof. Polar Bears have been around for thousands of years, and remember, we are only at the average for the last 2,000 years. They lived through all the previously warmer climates. The original picture of 2 bears on a floating ice block was a complete scam. The photographer explained that the bears were in no danger and close to shore. The picture was lifted from a public PC by another passenger and sent around the world.
8. Many glaciers are expanding. Even Antarctica is growing on 98% of is land mass. Only 2% is melting.

9. There is no consensus on AGW. This was a lie that has been propagated by the media.

10. Yes we emit CO2 into the atmosphere and it is a greenhouse gas, but, we only contribute about .28% of all the greenhouse effect. Water vapor makes up about 95% of the greenhouse effect. CO2 and other trace gases round out the greenhouse gases at about 5% for all of them. Of that 5%, only 3% is CO2, and most of that is natural. Again, our contribution to the greenhouse effect is a paltry .28%

11. The spread of disease is not attributed mainly to temperature. If this were the case, Florida would be a giant festering disease ridden cesspool. Economic standing is the primary determining factor in the spread of disease. Poor cultures can not fight the disease or eradicate the pests like more successful nations.

12. Natural climate disasters (hurricanes, cyclones, etc) have never been scientifically linked to global warming (whether natural or man made).

NO. It is not real...
Yes, there are ozone depletion's, but global warming is not a legit thing. If you look at the pattern of the heating and cooling of the earth over time, It consistantly heats up and freezes, going back and forth. A short 100 years is just a drop in the bucket of time to have enough proof to say that the average temperature of the earth has increased. Also, take a look at recent things around the world. This past winter, snow fell in several places that hasnt recieved snow in 50 years!!!!
I wish i had the articles in front of me discussing the fact that NO scientist can actually provide PROOF, not correlations, but PROOF that it exists. The information is out there, legit sources. If all else fails check out drudge report.
Sorry i cant remember the name of the articles, but that info IS THERE

I think it's real but it's a good thing.
Here is why:
It's well known that plants thrive in warm, humid environments, with high levels of CO2. As more CO2 is put into the air more plants will thrive across the plant as is being seen now with satellite images taken over time.
The planet is becoming more green with plant life:

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=0807081240...
As temperatures increase, more water from oceans will evaporate, which will cause more humidity in the air, which, of course, causes more rain. We see this in the tropical regions around the equator of the earth.
http://www.ace.mmu.ac.uk/eae/climate/Older/Rainfal...
From the increased rainfall more land will be converted into forests such as deserts and polar regions like Antarctica.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn2811
http://aob.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract...
This is nothing new. The earth once had much more CO2 in the air, the planet was warmer, and much more of the land surfaces were covered with a much more dense concentration of plant life. Since animals eat plants and there was such an abundance of food this allowed creatures to grow to such enormous size to where dinosaurs existed.
http://dinosaurs.about.com/od/dinosaurevolution/a/...
Cold Blooded creatures such as turtles as alligators could thrive in the polar regions.

Plants take CO2 from the air and put it into the ground. In the past volcanoes would recycle the CO2 and put it back into the air. Now it is humans that are doing the recycling by putting CO2 from the ground back into the air from where it started.
In a CO2 rich, warmer planet, Humans will thrive because we will have more land available to plant our crops. An excess of crops will allow us to create renewable plant based bio fuels which will power our vehicles and cities. Less people will go hungry and man, animal and plants will thrive.

the gorilla in the bedroom of global warming is volcanism. a significant volcanic eruption that lasts for weeks can dump more dust and pollutants into the upper atmosphere than china can in a year. global warming is a natural process that may be influenced by the green house gas emissions of mankind. you will have to do more research on this subject.

No. The earth has suffered from climate changes for millions and billions of years. Are you going to tell me that the ice age was caused by the animals? It's just a load of bull....

This has been posted before and everybody should read and understand what Dr. Harpper is saying about AGW and the science that claims to support it. It is clear and concise language that anybody 6 years old or older should be able to understand and he makes some very clear statements about the validity of most of the people promoting AGW before Congress with evidence.

I don't believe in global warming. This is all a hoax designed to take our money and our freedom. Think about this, our government owns GM and now they will soon mandate smaller vehicles (that in my opinion) are less safe.

No. It's just one more lie coming from our lying politicians.
Twenty five years ago it was the New Ice Age that we were entering. Then it was the "hole" in the ozone layer. Then it was Y2K. Then it was the AIDS epidemic that was going to kill all humans by the early years of the 21st Century.
There was the War on Poverty, and the War on Crime, and the War on Drugs, and now the War on Terrorism. These are just power grabs by our criminal politicians.

Even the warming isn't anything out of the ordinary and it hasn't significantly warmed in a decade. The human caused portion of the warming of the last century isn't known but it obviously isn't significant or harmful.

According to a poll it's real. It's the new way, we get to vote on physics.
This is closely related to another theory that shouting louder makes one more authoritative.
Also, note very carefully that if you don't think it's real, you may have a mental disorder: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/chri...
And finally, be careful if you deny global warming is real since it may become a criminal offense: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msi...
