What does the 9th commandment really mean?
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor". I was taught as a child that the 9th commandment was not to lie. But to me, this sounds more like something about gossiping about your neighbor, and saying bad things about them.
I'm just wondering.

I think it means that you don't tell malicious lies. I DON'T think it has anything to do with polite "social" lies, on the order of "no, that dress doesn't make you look fat."

Well, according in Barney Stinson, the 9th commandment states "No fat chicks". As in "Thou shall not lie - with fat chicks"

It is a law that has to do with being in front of judges and lying for another person, or about another person.

I really don't care what it means, all I know is that it is morally wrong to lie or gossip and say hateful things about your neighbor, and I know this thanks to having a sense of morality that I have formed on my own, not because a senior citizen climbed a mountain and carved ten rules into stone

bearing false witness is to make a false accusation or to spread a false rumor about someone or giving false testimony about someone.

Me I think it means to not lie or tattle on your neighbor. I also think it means to not gossip.
