American Internet speed?

If you are going to live in a large metropolitan area.

Verizon FiOS offers 50Mbps.

AT&T has U-Verse but it is only maxed out at 18Mbps

Reason being...they do not want to spend the money to make what "dark fiber" they already have at the poles useable for residential use.

Not to mention a majority of the fiber is FFTN instead of FFTH.

This is one reason why I'd like to stay in Japan.... Gotta love NTT Hikari Fiber that runs at 100Mbps.

It's the download speed. It's not the total internet speed. With Italy's 50MBPS, you would probably get around 150-200KBPS download speeds and with wireless probably around 50-75KBPS. 1000KB is equal to 1MB, so AT&T can download at 6000KBPS compared to 50-200. I've heard a lot of good things about Verizon and T-Mobile, but I live in Canada so I don't really know much about internet service providers in the States.

Depends on what will be your location in America. Northeast, verizon fios, optimum on-line, comcast, roadrunner, plus many others have dl speeds well beyond 6 Mbps. Look in your area for a good provider.

the highest i ever heard for commercial users in america was 60 mbps download, but that's only avalible in some areas, really expensive

its a lot harder to build the infrastructure in america, the land mass is much different

That is common. The US has slower speeds than other areas like Europe and Japan because of our monopoly like providers. They would rather pad their pockets than invest in a better network.

As far as the best service, it all depends on the area that you'll be living. You will only have access to the company or companies that provide service there.

I'm in Tampa, Florida and I have Brighthouse Road Runner service. I get 10Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. There are higher and lower plans as well.
