Are the Ten Commandments really mostly irrelevant today?
I need a little help understanding other people’s logic regarding the Ten Commandments.
I have read several statements from various people that the Ten Commandments are not relevant in today’s world. (NOTE: I am NOT talking about Old Covenant vs New Covenant.)
They say the only rules that even remotely apply today are not to kill and not to steal.
For those that do not know what the Ten Commandments are:
I: - - -Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
II:- - -Thou shalt not worship graven images.
III: - -Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
IV:- -Keep the Sabbath day holy.
V: - -Honour thy father and thy mother.
VI: - -Thou shalt not kill.
VII:- -Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
VIII: -Neither shalt thou steal.
IX: - -Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
X:- - -Neither shalt thou covet.
If a person believes there is no God and that The Bible is purely man made, I can understand 1-4 being irrelevant to a non-believer. (With potentially a little debate on 2 & 3) But for this question we will ignore 1-4 and assume them to be irrelevant in today’s world, at least to people that do not believe in anything beyond this life.
But that still leaves 6 more … how are commandments 5-10 not relevant or not a good idea to follow today (even if the bible is false/written by man and there is no god)?
Before I choose best answer I will put in a few of my thoughts.
First I was sort of hoping that one or more of the people that were saying that the commandments are not relevant today would “pick up the gauntlet” and give some insight into their perspective regarding their ideas that only one or two of the commandments are relevant today. For believe I or not I really am curious and would like to understand their point of view.
But alas that has not happened.
After rereading the responses here I feel I need to point out to people there is a HUGE difference between DISCUSSING something exploring possibilities and AGREEING with what is being discussed. While I personally agree with several of the statements made about the commandments, the answers/statements are totally irrelevant to the question that was asked.
It also strikes me as odd/interesting how many people made special effort to say that the rules are no more special than any other set of rules and should not be held in a higher status. When my question was asking why some believe the ideas/rules listed are not important to follow today.
(That might be an interesting area of personal perceptions to explore, in another question.)
I was going to put in some of my ideas regarding the commandments but to save space there is a page that makes some interesting points located at:
http://troach.org/faith/prob10c.htm
I would have probably said some things differently here, but the page has some interesting points.
The answer I am choosing for best answer is the one that least explored an idea as to why the people might say/rationalize the commandments are not important today was the one that talked about relativism. It is an interesting idea; one that without much effort could be used to explain the actions/viewpoints morals (or lack of) that many people demonstrate in today’s world.
It also might be an area that could be interesting to explore others opinions, in a different question.
So with that said, I would like to thank everyone for answering.

Morality USED to come from religion. God, revealing this to Moses, determined to us what is right and wrong. it 's WRONG to kill or steal. Period.
With the founding of nations those laws have been, for the most part for the west, the founding laws of our nations minus the religion part. It used to be that everything was closed on Sundays in the US. It used to be that kids had respect for their parents.
Now that people aren't religious anymore, where are kids taught now to behave?? Certainly not at home anymore, not in church because they don't go. Also, relativism has developed, giving people excuses for doing bad things. Well, he hit me so I hit him and killed him. If he hadn't of hit me, I wouldn't have killed him. So relativism has become part of our morality now. It's fine to steal or even kill in certain circumstances. With religion, for the most part, morality, virtues and being good goes out the window.

Besides Not kill or steal?
Do Not commit Adultery. I'm pretty sure that even in a secular world, don't cheat on your wife is pretty relevant.
Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor. This is a long way to say don't lie. Which again, even in a secular world, lies are seen as a bad thing.
Honor thy father and thy mother. Your parents gave you life, they raised you and for good or ill they have molded the person you are today. They deserve respect, not to be dismissed when old in some home, or to be mistreated. Sure their are plenty of bad parents out there, but don't forget about the many great parents out there, Don't they deserve respect?
The Last one is don't envy others' possessions and appreciate what you have, Again Envy is a petty emotion, wont you agree.

No, they are perfectly relevant today; especially so!
1. God is asking you not to worship anything but Him - including the TV, movies, music, Internet, or any false religion.
2. Do you worship that graven image in the living room, shaped like a box?
3. Do you swear, and use God/Jesus' name in vain?
4. Do you believe that "any day in 7 is OK", or do you not worship your Creator on any day at all?
5. Do you have parents? Do you respect them, or diss them and disobey them?
6. Murder is definitely relevant today.
7. Do you commit adultery and fornication? DEFINITELY relevant today!
8. Stealing - definitely relevant today.
9. Lying - Definitely relevant today.
10. Do you wish you had things that your neighbors have? Do you try to "keep up with the Jones'", or are you content with what you have?:
Yes, I believe the 10 Commandments are ENTIRELY relevant today. If we all started obeying the 10 Commandments, ours would be a much better, more peaceful society.

They're all still pretty much relevent except for keeping the sabbath. The ten commandments were just a part of the Mosaic Law. Christians no longer need to keep the Mosaic Law. The Mosaic Law ended when Jesus sacrificed his life. (Colossians 2:13, 14) Jesus and his disciples followed the ten commandments in the gospels because Jesus hadn't given up his life yet.
Every one of the ten commandments is reiterated again in the New Testament except the sabbath. Well, you can observe it if you want, but it is no longer required. (Colossians 2:16)

Sorry Kayla, however the previous 10 are as new right now as they have been while they have been coated interior the Mosaic regulation. did you comprehend that the 1st 5 books of the Bible comprise the finished regulation as given to Israel? the ten commandments as being the regulation of God could probable be in comparison to the preamble of the form as being the full of our shape. What become real then continues to be real right now. on an identical time as you won't prefer to be held in charge to your strikes or have regulations placed on what you do, or do no longer do, God's be conscious continues to be absolute, and it fairly is authority continues to be in finished result now, as then. Obedience is often the terrific recourse.

Hebrews 8 tells us that the old law is obsolete. The principles are restated all through the New Testament, but the 10 commandments were only a small portion of the old law.

No, they are part of the Moral Law that we need to keep. Our salvation is not based on the law keeping because we are saved by grace.
We are under the new covenant now and we are saved only by the mercy and grace of God

They are relevant to today. They still teach us that no matter how hard we try, we are not able to abide by them, Therefore we need a better covenant. A new one, which leads us to Jesus. So...they are relevant in all walks of life, because when we discover the 'other six, they lead us to the first one.

They are relevant in that they are common sense, although those ideas existed long before their supposed writing in the forms of various codes and legal systems, and are not directly connected to any gods. I see no need to hold them in any manner of high regard or for them to have any place in places of law or government.

Everything not silly is in every single other law code by any other civilization, so the Commandments aren't special.
They are as relevant as the Code of Hammurabi, a historical document and nothing more.
