Is there any difference between spay, neuter and alter in cats and dogs and what are the differences?

Update:

I had a friend who had her female cat "fixed". When she let her outside after it had healed, since she was an indoor and outdoor cat, a male tried to mate with her. Her cat obliged and later died. She thinks that mating actions with a "fixed" cat will kill them. Is there a difference in the techniques?

I know people with "fixed" male and female cats and every not and then their humans find them "doing it". They never have kittens but they still play mating games.

Why did my friends cat die? i don't know whether she was spayed, neutered or altered or if it makes a difference.

There isn't a difference. It's just what terms people prefer (spay/neuter=altered).. There IS a difference between altering and vasectomized (vasectomized males still have the urge as if they were intact, but they are sterile). Sometimes altered animals will do this, especially if they had mated before being altered (the scent of an animal in heat will trigger memory and instinct).

No, mating when fixed will not kill an animal. She possibly could have contracted an illness (ie--feline leukemia, etc) from him, or it could have just been coincidence. But the act, itself, wouldn't have killed her.

I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. Best wishes.
