Is the main reason that some do not want to believe in God:?

because they do not want to be held accountable for their actions if they were to stand before an all Righteous all Judging God?

...what are your thoughts?

I agree..Most people don't like being told what they are doing is wrong...Nor do they like being told they will answer for it..

Yeah, maybe. But that's not the same thing as someone who actually doesn't believe in gods. Shall I explain?

Someobody who has faith might be going through some bad things and starts to question their faith. They feel angry at their god(s) for letting these bad things happen, so they don't want to believe. Or they're some angsty kid who decided they hate everything ;) This is the person in your question.

I don't believe in gods, and I don't want to, however my lack of belief came first. I was atheist, then further research made me realise that some gods (Judeo-Christian God for one) aren't too appealing based on what I read of religious texts. So that situation is different- I wouldn't believe whatever I thought of gods, but I wouldn't want to believe in the one I just mentioned. That's not because I don't want to be accountable for my actions- we have the law for that anyway- but because that god seems very violent and likes to make up arbitrary rules about my sex life.

  • I doubt you really want our thoughts. You just want confirmation that you're better than Atheists. But here goes:

No Atheist doesn't WANT to believe in a deity. It is simply impossible to force yourself to believe in something that makes no sense to them. Stare into the corner and believe that there is a pink unicorn there. Why don't you want to believe in the pink unicorn?

My spiritual beliefs involve the Great Spirit from which the Triple Goddess and the Horned God came and they exist within all things. Magick is an existing force of nature, as is the law of return, which means that all actions will return to the doer times three, making harmful actions (the only "sin") will cause horrible things will happen to them.

Why do you not want to believe in the Triple Goddess and Horned God? Is it because you are afraid of the Law of Return? (Answer: No, it's because you find it ridiculous and impossible to believe.)

PS: I do the right thing because I care about the world around me, not because I'm afraid. Which is more moral?

    No.

We're all accountable for our actions here and now, in this life. There are consequences to every decision we make, and every action we perform -- and we have to deal with those consequences here and now whether you believe in a god or not.

In fact, quite contrary to christian belief, atheists do not believe that some guy sacrificed himself to "take away" our wrongdoings, and that all you have to do is utter some magic words or get dunked in water to be "forgiven." We understand that we have to deal with the consequences of our acts, that no magic words of water bath will wash them from us. In general we're much more aware of the consequences of our actions.

"Belief" may be based on faith, but "disbelief" isn't. It's based on the evidence, or the lack thereof. Since there's no evidence of a god of any kind, the only rational and reasonable stance to take is to not believe in one. That requires no faith.

    Peace.

    sigh NO

You watch a lot of religious tv that accepts donations over the phone I take it?

IF that were true then WHY are there SO many trangressions among people who claim God is real?

Its my experience people who actually take "righteous and Judging God" seriously are a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

If there IS a master of the universe His power is in me as much as he is in anyone else. Until you show proof, you are just jivin' me.

Quelle(n): Sounds like an example of christian justifying judging others yet "Judge not lest ye be judged". Ah, the hypocrisy never lets up.

I think I've seen this idea put forth countless times, so I find it hard to believe that you just don't get it. We don't believe because there is no reason to believe. It isn't that we don't want to believe, we simply realize that there is no evidence to support belief. It doesn't even make sense to think as you suggest. After all, if we thought there may be a god, we'd know that simply denying it exists wouldn't protect us. We just don't believe. That's all there is to it.

'...do not want to believe....' I just don't as he doesn't. Are you saying you believe in him simply because 'you want to', thats crap faith to be honest. I want to believe in Santa. There is evidence against 'the word of God' ie the Bible. Its called science, history and logic.

I hold myself accountable for my own actions, don't use need some made up Messiahs sacrifice for them.

Belief and disbelief are not based on "wants". People who don't believe in a god simply cannot believe in something with such little evidence supporting it. You seem to be badly confused on this subject.

That is the story that religions like to teach. The truth is that we don't believe in god because we don't believe he exists.

Much like you don't believe in Apollo.

    It's that simple.

Actually,I'd love a big trial and reward.I've been a pretty good dude, rock solid, loyal and dependable.A reward would be nice. However,I'm atheist, and that completely shoots your theory all to hell

No, I don't believe in god because there is NO logical reason or need to believe in one or any for that matter.
