Why don't large corporations understand that employed people are consumers?
It seems a little non-sensical to believe that laying people off will increase consumer spending. Isn't it time to stop adding kindling to the fire? One random check isn't going to be enough to refire the economy. $500 isn't enough. What these people need is a regular paycheck. Another thing, why does the government encourage staying on unemployment? Consider that, for many, it is financially easier to collect unemployment than to take a job at McDonalds which would be productive but not enough to pay the bills. I think allowing partial unemployment would be smarter. At least people could contribute without taking more of a financial loss.

They do. (Are you serious that you think they don't?)
They aren't single random checks, they are many many specific checks, where 30,000/year employees cost almost 60,000 each. In pay, taxes and benefits.
Those companies don't owe their employees anything. They agreed to work at a job for a certain wage, when their services aren't needed any more, they're told their services aren't needed any more. Should you be required to continue to spend money are your local store, or should you be allowed to shop somewhere else if you like? Same problem, different scale.

Corporations are most concerned about their bottom line (profits). The shareholders and/or owners of the corporation demand that the executives do everything possible to improve their profit margin.
Some of the highest costs for an employer are wages and benefits and are among the easiest costs to reduce. Large corporations with thousands of workers make the news with large layoff numbers, but those numbers are a fraction of the total workforce.
Unemployment and laying off workers is a very complicated issue.
I don't agree that the government encourages unemployment. My state pays partial unemployment benefits to a laid-off worker if he or she works part-time. In fact, the unemployment benefits are a little higher if the worker can get a temporary job or part-time work while looking for a full time job. The unemployment benefits are also extended for this.
