a British MP says dyslexia does not exist? ?
according to Graham Stringer MP dyslexia is a "cruel fiction" made up by incompetent teachers as an excuse for poor teaching methods.
i am dyslexic, and also dyspraxic. i am not illiterate, i can actually spell quite well, but my memory is useless lol
is anyone else as furious about this ignorant man as i am?
"confused" i like your view, they do say there is no such thing as bad publicity.... but i dont think it will win him any votes

I also posted a question about Mr Stringer to see what the response would be. My daughter and elder sister are severely dyslexic and my daughter is also dyspraxic. My daughter was told she was not very bright when she was 8 years old, by a teacher.
I had to fight to have her assessed and to get the right help for her. I have a background in working with children with complex disabilities, more experienced that any of the teaching staff . They tried to tell me I was neurotic and convince me I was wrong. Good job I didn't back down. My daughter went on to get a degree, thanks to the extra support she had.
I hope that this very misguided and foolish man is made to eat his words. If anything there should be better training for teachers in assessing and supporting children with dylexia and other difficulties.

I know this is not really the answer you were looking for, but we work in an higher education environment, teaching applied mathematics and engineering principles.
There are 26 of us in the university, and on seeing Mr. Stringers comments, we took offence to the accusations toward teachers.
During the debate we decided to honestly complete a specific learning Difficulty questionnaire of the type used in current UK schools.
None of us had ever complained of any form of related problem in this field.
The results were quite interesting - 9 of us had an SPLD according to the test.
So I wonder if Stringer may be on the track of something.

What a prat! No, not a prat, he's much worse than that!
My English tutor was actually dyslexic and was told at school by his own English teacher that he would never get anywhere because of his dyslexia but this is blatantly untrue!
This man will be in a lot of trouble - hopefully!

I thought "hump!" when I heard that nonsense.I have severe disculcalia- for an example, I only learned the time at 14.I bet if he struggled with symbols, timetables, essay preparation and time the way I do, he wouldn't come out with something so ignorant.Turning up for something an hour early, because of time problems is not funny nor was being shouted at in the classroom for being "lazy" either.
Mean Mr Mustard, I got NO help at school at all-I also have and had a lot of mental health issues (self harming, suicidal, depression, OCD, nervous breakdown and SAD) and deserved to get help.Don't just assume.I never played things up, in fact I played them down. Now days, I demand my right to extra support and I get it.
Why did I get a thumbs down??

I have worked for several years with people with dyslexia and I know how it works and what they have to go through.
Graham Stringer MP is a bigot who hasn't bothered to do his homework.

We already know that most things that come out of MP's mouths are bull****.
They tend to say things i would expect of a five year old child. As both my brother and my best friend are dyslexic, i can second this.

Off course these conditions exist
I'm furious too ,as who is he to spout off like this
People have tried for years to get recognition for these conditions and some ignoramus like him comes along and blames it on teachers
if his theory was true, surely everyone in a class would have these conditions, and not just the few who have

Well I understand Doctor Spooner wasn't too happy either. He confirmed once again that he did not invent the Spoonerism and that it was all a lace bible.

From what I've witnessed claiming dyslexia is an affective method for getting extensions in exams and lots of other academic bonuses. My spelling is awfull I could have easily got extensions etc if I had applied.
