Why is the price of diesel so high?
With the price of crude under $40 a barrel and the price of gasoline hovering around $1.50 to $1.75. Why are truckers being forced to pay $2.50 to $3.00 a gallon? With truckers paying so much for fuel, the price of products on the shelf are going to remain high. Are we being gouged still?

if you were to look up how crude is made into the gas that our cars consume, you'd see that it actually takes a lot more work to make diesel fuel, and from one barrel of crude you make a LOT less diesel than you do any other sort of fuel, so even though gas prices are low for most people, they are still high for truckers.

A few reasons. One is supply and demand. With the recent develoments in Diesel technology, there has been a boom in diesel burning vehicle sales. Every other driveway in America now has either a Super Duty Ford or a Cummins Dodge in the driveway. Also in the northern US, they are now using a lower grade of Diesel for heating oil. Demand has risen sharply.
The environmental standard requiring low-sulfur diesel also had a big affect on price.
So, even though it costs less to make, since Diesel is a by-product of the Gasoline refinery process, it sells at a higher price.

What is it that moves this country? 18 wheelers! They are back and forth, and up and down our highways moving products from one side of the country to the other.
The government figured they could tax the hell out of diesel fuel because big rigs will always be on the road buring fuel.
Just wait, its going to get worse until we shut these global warming idiots up for good.
They are thinking about installing GPS devices in cars and charging you by how many miles you drive. Of course, you will have to pay for the GPS to be installed, pay for the device itself or pay rent on it. You will probably have to pay a monitoring fee as well.

When federal law required refineries to go to the low sulfer diesle, the didnt build enough refineries to handle demand. In a few years they should catch up and the price should get back the way it should. That is unless the oil companies like making more money. :)
