However internet access is a must have for updates and such. So once you install the OS I suggest that you pay to get internet access in your home.

The easiest way to get Linux is to either borrow a CD from a friend or the library, or, depending on the distribution, request a free CD or buy one (still very very cheap). Of course, having an Internet connection would allow you to gain access to a HUGE portion of Linux's potential, such as updates, etc. Pretty much all Linux applications are found on-line. So, if you don't want to spend too much money, I would suggest dial-up or a wireless connection with a broadband router. A large, community driven distro would be the best, such as Ubuntu or Fedora, as it would be bug-free and easy to use.

go to distrowatch.com and read up on the various Linux distros out there (my favourites are: Dream Linux, Linux Mint, Gos and Ubuntu) Once you have decided on one, you can go to their site and either download a copy or order a copy. If you download you will have to burn an ISO image. You will have to make sure your computer's bios is set to boot the cd/dvd drive first. Then insert the cd/dvd and reboot the computer and follow the instructions.

Another way is to find out if there is a Linux Users Group in your area. If there is, get in touch with them. They will be more than happy to help you set up your box.

you can do a few different things. you can order an installation cd or you can download the live cd from a distro website(like fedora or ubuntu) and then burn it to disk using an iso burner on a friends computer
