PS3 80GB. It said 74GB right out of the box. The update ate 10Gb I'm down to 64GB Is this normal?

That is a great question because most of the world is not made up of geeks like me and others who answered your question. Formatting any drive takes space because it sets the file structure, the programs that are self installed such as a browser, file protection, even a virtual drive for the operating system. The baseline testing of the drive before these factors is 80 GB, and for true advertising purposes, it should be shown as such, but it is not.

Why the upgrade took another 10 GB is something I would specifically ask the company. That seems to be a lot to me also; if they upgraded programs that are on your system, they should be happy to tell you that.

You may discover that there are programs that you do not want or use. But, be careful in removing these programs because they may contain links into the ones you use. Ask which ones can be removed safely. t

mine used up 3gb right out the box, which left me 37gb from a 40gb ps3.

i have the system software version 2.53

it only used the same 3gb and did not use more.

Yes 74GB because a hard drive has formatted space for its own info as well as some of that is just empty code for background services that we dont need to worry about. The rest of the space for the PS3 data and services, such as its browser, Life with Playstation, Home, etc.
