From The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The Babel fish was actually a tiny fish that you put in your ear that performed translations for you.

Babel fish, a fictitious species in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books by Douglas Adams.
It also comes from the Bible story about the tower of Babel where everyone was speaking in different languages. BabelFish uses that to put all answers in simplified information.

I haven't read Hitchiker's Guide, but there is more to this story...
Babel refers to Babylon in the Bible. God decided to split up everyone's languages to make them more humble...people who were too readily able to communicate with each other were getting "uppity" and needed to be put in their place. So everyone sounded like there were babelling to each other.
