My car has suddenly started making a noise - that I think is coming from the rear wheel (but I'm not certain). It starts at about 25 mph, and increases a little in pitch and volume up to 30 mph at which point it sounds almost constantly even at higher speeds. It sounds a bit like the classic "flying saucer noise" (a warbling moan). The tires are almost new and I had an alignment done recently (when the tires were replaced). Any idea? brakes? bearings?

I was in St Petersburg a few weeks ago, and my local guides took me to a small shop near the Nevsky prospect that sold coffee and donuts. The story was that this place was a historical landmark from the soviet days that was still doing business. The store had only one choice of donut, and you could get coffee one way - with milk and sugar. They jokingly remarked that there was of course only one choice - like any good soviet era establishment.

Can anyone name this place for me, please?

With all of the various cultures throughout the world, and our modern syncretic mishmash of customs, who is supposed to bring presents to you?

In Sweden it used to be a goat (the julbock) that brought presents, and an elf (the jultomte) that left sticks to spank bad children. These days Santa has pretty much taken over.

Here in Texas we're expecting Santa, but I want to cover all the bases - just to be sure.

It shows a young boy of perhaps 10 or 12 (in very short crew cut) going into a public restroom at school. The narrator walks him through brushing his hair, washing his hands, using the paper towel to turn off the faucet, and to open the door.

It's in black and white, possibly from the 60's or even as early as the mid-40s.

The memorable scene involves a fight where one master's head is chopped off by a thrown boomerang, flies around the battlefield laughing at the enemy and then reattaches itself to his body (all in bad 60's or 70's wire-fu with washed out color and grainy, scratched film).

Worse, I have no idea if this was some piece of grindhouse sausage with one and a half extant prints (all in QT's vault), or if it actually is out there on DVD.

Any help or clues greatly appreciated.

Several times I've answered perfectly reasonable questions from other members (like a math question, or "where is this quote originally from?") , only to have the question deleted a day later.

What's going on?

Is someone perhaps deleting their own question to keep their teacher from identifying their plagiarism? Or is this some sort of point gaming that I'm unaware of?

a lot of my wife's belly (Navel to waist) is now a dark purple color. Is this a normal side-effect, or should we be worried about complications? I have a call in to the surgeon's office, but no answer yet.

She had bad cramping due to forced ovulation by injection and an IUI proceedure. She took some ibuprofin and went to sleep.

In the middle of the night she went to the bathroom and in the middle of defecating passed out and fell to the floor.

There's no sign of blood, but she had very runny stool (all over the place). No fever, but she is damp and it is fairly cool in the house. She continues to be dizzy when she tries to get up or roll over, and is quite nauseous. She's lucid.

I called the physician on call at the fertility clinic, but all they would say was that the IUI and drugs related to the procedure wouldn't cause this. Feinting wasn't an emergency. It was up to me.

So, do I take her to the ER, just watch her to make sure she doesn't get worse, or what?

About two years ago we had to replace our shingles because of hail damage (a somewhat frequent occurrence in our part of texas), and chose to replce it with metal roofing. At the same time we cut a continuous ridge vent. The end result is that the attic became *much* cooler. (like from 150 F down to approximately the outside temperature). I'm pretty sure it is well-ventillated (though possibly too well ventillated?).

Recently I started noticing bubbling of the paint on the ceiling inside the house, and places where the plaster had been erroded away under the surface. In some paces you would see a slight depression, but if you touched it it woud crumble in as if teh plaster had washed away but the paper and surface plaster remained. The plaster underneath is stained.

Our AC ductwork is the mylar pipe type and runs through the attic. I suspect, but haven't confirmed, that the problem may be condensation on the AC ductwork. But possibly the problem could also be...

I have about a half-dozen stitches on my fingers (palm side) from an accident about a week ago. The ER doctor told me to have them removed in about a week (today).

I'm not sure who to see to have them removed. This is further complicated since my PCP isn't available for a few days. I'm also not sure how critical it is to have them out "on time".

How urgent is it to get them removed, and who should I go see (clinic, ER, wait a few days and see my PCP, ...)?

Wouldn't it be nice if people who rated an answer thumbs down (or up) could comment on why. This would be especially useful for differentiating the cases where a thumbs down was given to an answer because the rater disagrees with a minor point vs trying to express that the answer is just totally wrong.

We have a slab home and one of our sinks drain is completely stopped up. The plumber tried to snake it out and failed. He said he found mud when he pulled the snake back out, and thinks that the iron pipe probably rotted through. However none of the other drains in the house seem to have any problems. He will return with a camera to check it out for certain on Monday (no additional charge)

*IF* the pipe is rotted out, he suggests tunneling under the slab to replace the damaged pipe - and considering the age of the house (1962), he suggests replacing all of the iron pipe with PVC all the way to the sewer main. Furthermore he suggests running the new line around the house rather than under it in order to minimize a chance of foundation problems due to excessive tunneling.

What do you think of his proposed solution, and how much should such a repair cost?

My spelling may be incorrect, but the word is pronounced somewhat like the english word "sorry". In context, it was being used to excuse someone for taking food that didn't belong to them.

A: "leave the money - that would be stealing"

B: "Isn't taking the food stealing?"

All the unanswered questions seem to have disappeared

We have a very good friend living with us while he gets back on his feet. He's new to the area and staying with us while he earns enough money to get a place of his own. (note we are NOT in a hurry to get him out of the house, we enjoy having him with us).

This Christmas we all exchanged gifts, and we felt bad because he had spent a lot more money on gifts for us than we had for him. We could have spent more, but were being conservative in order to avoid embarrassment. Apparently this backfired.

In the future I guess we could set up a guideline to avoid this sort of thing.

He was very gracious about it, but I really sort of feel like I need to make it up to him.

Any good advice out there?

Interesting that the healthcare system came up so frequently.

In my experience most of the Canadians that I have met abroad have very clearly explained how awful the Canadian medical system was in comparrison to local healthcare and expressed gratitude at being able to use the local system because they "would never have gotten the right treatment in Canada", "would have had to suffer for months before getting the right tests scheduled", "would have died before being able to see a specialist", "would have lost their baby if they hadn't run across the border to get proper care", "are living in <country> because Canadian healthcare sucks", "husband would have died", etc. (note THEIR words, not mine).

I heard this most recently in Spain this year. So what's the real story?

We've got a local bunch of activists who are trying to stop a Walmart from opening locally. They're petitioning the local neighborhood associations for money (a LOT of money), and then swamping the association meetings with new members (signing up on the spot) to vote themselves the money. How can we stop them from stealing our association funds for their own political ends?

Locally there is a Wal-mart being proposed for development. I've overheard meetings of the protest group and their real reason is quite abominable: they really want to stop development of a Walmart in order to discourage poor and homeless people, and people of certain ethnic origins from being in "their" neighborhood. The reaons they present to the public are quite different.

How can I legally expose these biggots for the racist/eliteist jerks that they are without endangering myself?
