how can i tell me boss that i quit? (complicated situation)?

here's the thing. i've been working there for five months now, but i honestly can't take it anymore. originally, my friend & i were hired as replacements for a girl who had been there for ten years. they trained us but now everything seems to be falling apart. we have ZERO respect over there. and it's not like we're not trying. we're young and we make mistakes. we're not friggin doctors so how are we supposed to have everything memorized. they expect us to work there for the next couple years. they've changed a lot of things at the work place because they thought we couldn't handle things. plus, i didn't realize before i accepted the job that it would conflict with an internship i would be taking after the new year. how do i tell them i'm quitting. he's already had a heart attack from too much stress at work. i'm also terrified of them giving me a bad reference for future jobs. some of the ladies don't seem to like us very much. what am i supposed to do? should i talk to him now and tell him i'm not coming back after the new year? then later should i hand him a letter of resignation? help!

Update:

my boss doesn't understand me at all. i'm serious. he's always trying to convince me into siding with him. i'm terrified of them laughing in my face when i ask for a reference because i overheard how angry they got over a patient once and they said they hate it when people only come because they want something from them.

plus, on future resumes, should i include a phone number for a new job place to call and ask about me?

First, this post was to wordy. It's important to express youself, but it should be relevant, non-repetitive, and focused. That story could have been conveyed in 3 lines.

From the part I read you have a few options

    1) Don't show up to work again. Forget the place ever existed. They will get the hint soon enough

    2) Send a resignation letter via email, fax, or the mail. It should state. "Thanks for the opportunity, but this is not for me. I resign."

    3) Have some class. Walk into your bosses office, state that you are qutting in person, place your resignation letter on their desk, and leave. Don't look back..

    My suggestion:

Conflict resolution is something that occurs quite often in both professional, and personal relationships. Best to get a hang of it, and be able to deal with it head on. You have a better idea to what degree you are currently able, and comfortable dealing with, in this situtation.

Talk to your boss now and tell him about your internship. They may be relieved that you are going! It could be a mutually happy occurrence. It definitely will reduce the stress on you, and you are more likely to get a good reference if you give plenty of notice. Then the boss and others at your job can make plans for a replacement.

The formal letter of resignation is always a good plan. It is just a professional way to handle things. If you have a written copy of the date you gave them notice, then you can always refer to that in the REMOTE chance that they say something different.

Best wishes, and I hope you have a better time until the new year begins!

When you are ready to leave, hand your boss a written two weeks notice, and tell him what it is. If you give them a longer notice, they may cut your hours, giving less than two weeks can put a no rehire letter in your personnel file at many companies. Just tell your boss that you are pursuing other opportunities, you don't need to make big explanations about why you are leaving. As long as you are doing your job, and behaving professionally, you should not have a problem with bad references, but you should ask your boss if you can use him as a reference for the future. He will probably let you know right then if it will be ok.

You are not obligated to give any notice at all,but it would be better if you gave at least a 2 week notice so your boss can find a replacement for you.

With the holidays,I think a 3-4 week notice would be better.

You can ask your boss for a letter of recommendation before you leave.

It depends on when you want to leave. You should give your employer two weeks notice at the very least so that they can find your replacement. If you can wait it out give him a resignation letter stating that you will be leaving after the new year due to the internship. The point is to not burn bridges. You want to leave on the best terms possible.

You need to meet with him and just tell the truth. How can you argue with the truth? Good luck.
