Does anyone know what the 7 layers of hell are?
Is this just a saying or is there a belief that their are different degrees of damnination?

It’s derived from "The Divine Comedy", more specifically "Inferno" an epic poem (and by "epic" I don't mean great...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_poem) from the collection, written by Dante Alighieri between 1308 and his death in 1321.
They are nine circles (layers):
First Circle (Limbo)
Here reside the unbaptized and the virtuous pagans, who, though not sinful, did not accept Christ.
Second Circle
Those overcome by lust are punished in this circle.
Third Circle
Cerberus guards the gluttons, forced to lie in a vile slush made by freezing rain, black snow, and hail.
Fourth Circle
Those whose concern for material goods deviated from the desired mean are punished in this circle.
Fifth Circle
In the swamp-like water of the river Styx, the wrathful fight each other on the surface, and the sullen or slothful lie gurgling beneath the water.
Sixth Circle
Heretics are trapped in flaming tombs.
Seventh Circle
This circle houses the violent. Its entry is guarded by the Minotaur, and it is divided into three rings.
The last two circles of Hell punish sins that involve conscious fraud or treachery.

That idea comes from the Inferno, by Dante Alighieri...there is no mention of any place called "hell" in Christianity but there is such a thing as damnation.
So in Dante's hell, you go to a different level depending what your sins were, the lower in Hell you are the worst. the 7th level is for traitors like Brutus, Judas and Cassius (and Lucifer)....the 1st level of hell is for Lust, which is the least serious of all sins. In between Purgatory and Inferno is Limbo, where people go who lived before Jesus. Its not heaven, but its not unpleasant either.
You can wikipedia it if you wanna know more.

There is no Hell.
archeologist found some old writings on clays in Babylon.
which shows that such layers of hell comes from an Ashuri Myth .
remember, those writings date back to 10,000 B.C

Read Gospel of Barnabas available online. The Gospel describes the 7 hells vividly and who the hells are for, each layers.

look up 'the divine comedy' on wikipedia. the article on this work has a list of all the layers and their contents as described by Dante.

The pagans believed there were seven heavens.
Paul makes it clear that he believed such things when he spoke of a man who had reached the third heaven.
But your seven layered hell sounds like something recently invented by a fundie who thinks he has unlocked a secret message in the bible.

There's nothing in the bible or qua ran about them, that was started by dante's inferno. But the worse the sins the worse the punishments in hell, so they say. I don't believe in hell myself.

I think that was more in Dante's Inferno than in the Bible.
I don't recall there being layers of hell in the Bible, but obviously, there were in Dante's Inferno, that's what it's all about.
