what do you think about this lawsuit?
There is a lesbian couple that wanted to have a child, so they went to a ob/gyn so one of them could be artificially inseminated. The doctor, due to his Christian beliefs refused to perform the service for them. They went elsewhere. Another doc did the insemination and "they" are pregnant. Now they are suing the first doc for discrimination.
My thought, this was not a medical emergency, that the doc refused to perform. Do you honestly think, whether you agree with homosexuality or not, that this is just a very frivolous lawsuit? The reason I put this in religious section, not law, or gay section, is because it has to do with the freedom of a Christian doc to stand by his or her beliefs.
laptop Jesus- sorry about the "THEY" thing. I just put that there because even straight call THEMSELVES pregnant. you seem to not be answering the questioning though. Interesting!!

The fact that I'm a Christian has nothing to do with my reaction to this. I hate how so many these days sue for disagreements!!!!!!!!! This is disgusting, and they better not win.
What next, suing a doctor who tells you to quit smoking or lose some weight because it hurts your feelings????

It is not frivolous, because it ties into several other medical-related issues involving ethics and religion.
Several states have been dealing with, and some have passed laws regarding, whether pharmacists have the right to refuse to fill some prescriptions based on religious grounds. For instance, can they refuse to prescribe Plan B, RU486, or even birth control? The consensus has been moving that they do not have this right, as it can lead to a de facto imposing of their religious beliefs on others. (What if they are the only pharmacy in town, for instance?)
If this doctor is deemed to have the right to refuse treatment to a patient solely on the basis of his own religious beliefs then what is to stop a group of doctors to set up a regional medical theocracy where they ALL refuse to perform such a service on certain people based on religious strictures. It opens the door to discrimination in a dangerous way.
Doctors are not Gods - they are professionals providing a service, one that is highly regulated by the government and of high importance, but a service nonetheless.

First things first, I am not a believer in any religion or god.
People are entitled to their beliefs, and any gay people should be able to live their lives as they see fit, so long as they do no harm to anyone else.
So is the first doctor. As it was not a medical emergency he did not violate his Hippocratic oath, so it is an example of what is wrong with America and the U.K. where blood sucking lawyers are encouraged to engage in frivolous and pointless law suits.

A frivolous lawsuit- Yes, I do. I am not religious and I don't like the way so many Christians judge others. But I think this doctor has his faith and should be allow to follow his faith. To sue him is not allowing him to practice his religion and that is unconstitutional.

As long as there was no immediate threat to life and there was a reasonable, accessible alternative, the doctor could morally choose what procedure he did/did not want to do.
That lawsuit will only polarize people, set them harder, not advance gay and lesbian rights. And I'm a bleeding liberal when it comes to rights.

The question basically boils down to a collision between freedom of equality and freedom of religion.

If it is a private practice doctor, he has the right to refuse things like that.

Hopefully the defense charges will be charged back to the suers. That is the only way to discourage these suits.

They will not win their lawsuit.
