What war was shown in Pan's Labyrinth?
Excuse my ignorance, but what war is involved in the movie Pan's Labyrinth? I thought it was WWII, but now I am questioning it. If it is WWII, what role did Spain play in it?

It was the Spanish Civil War which preceeded WWII, (1936-1939) and in which the German Luftwaffe (supporting the Fascist Franco's forces) participated. The Spanish took no official role in the Second World War.

It was the Spanish Civil War. It was happening during WWII and was important really because Spain had a fascist leader named Franco.

The Spanish civil war between the facists (Franco) and communists. In fact both Germany and the USSR were involved in the war, which preceeded WWII.

In Pan's Labyrith specifically shows the "mop up" of communist/republican guerillas after the civil war had been decisively won by Franco. Such fight dragged on for several year esp. in the North where republican sympathies had been particularly strong & fighters were able to smuggle arms from France (though the French & later Vichy govt. technically forbade such)
