Why do so many people assume...?

I heard this too, and I, myself, have done magic for personal reasons many times without negative reprocussions. Mostly healings and such.

I (like many) believe this is a "Charmed" rule that only should exist there, in the television world. Why do we have to cater to others only, and not be a little selfish now and then??? We do not do magic simply for the benefit of others only, we sometimes need help too, and do not have the benefit of having other witches around to help US.

Charmed was already a popular show when I became a Wiccan. I did not see any of the Charmed episodes until 2004 when I bought my first season on DVD. However I did hear discussion on this many times on Wicca groups.

I have been studying Wicca since 2002 and have been Wiccan since 2004. I have concluded that most people who believe it is wrong to cast spells for personal gain has watched way too much Charmed.

I love the show and became a huge fan and I now own all 8 season on DVD but many misconceptions about Wicca and witchcraft has come out of this show.

I see nothing wrong with casting a spell to win the lottery. One man was on the news last year because he was a Wiccan High Priest and won the lottery in his state and gave the credit for winning on his spell casting.

A spell for us is like a prayer for other religions. In a prayer people ask for help, for a sick person to recover, get a head in live, and so on. We do the same thing in a diffrent manner. Yes we do feel a closer connection to the god/goddes.

When I see people asking for a spell in question, I will look at it. If its like tell me how to do this ... Or give me a love spelll....I question the reasons. The few that are genuine asking for help are easier to answer.

You can blame it on Charmed or shows and movies like Charmed. In some cases that may be true, but you cant say everyone curious about Wicca or magick in general is obsessed with Charmed.

I totally don't get the whole personal gain thing. It isn't in anything I have ever read. It is just another one of those Hollywood misconceptions. Who better to do a spell and invest energy into, than the person who will gain the most form it. I draw the line at interfering with free will of others, but beyond that why take the time to learn the craft if it isn't going to make your life better.

According to Scott Cunningham in his book "Living Wiccan" Under the Law of the Power he writes:

"The Power can be used for your own gain, as long as by doing so you harm none."

and

also under that Law of the power he writes:

" Use not the power for prideful gain, for such cheapens the mysteries of Wicca and magic."

OH that personal gain crap. I'm betting it came from Charmed because I'd never heard of it before. Any spell would be personal gain because what you put out you get back. So, yep personal gain. lol

They assume that because they think they know everything there is to know.

Is not each Wicca spell ended with ... So mote it be? Does that not imply that it is a request and that weather or not gain is given is completely up to the deity invoked?? I think so. Peace&Love be with you...~M~

Because people believe that using your religion and bond with your dieties to increase your wealth, love life, and other things is irresponsible, rude, and abuse of religion and personal power. Thats what I figure they think.

magic is in the bible read about Moses and Enoch and Solomon all magic is Alchemy thier is a good magic and a bad magic.

I don't take a moral stance against it, but I would say its wrong because it doesn't work. The practice of homeopathic and sympathic magics is based on an understanding of nature that ignores the physical laws science and observation have established. Committing oneself to such practices is foolish, or as the great Leonard Cohen put it...
