How do you address people you don't know in a letter?
I have to write a letter to a bank, and I don't know the person I am writing to... How do I start the letter? (I am a foreigner so I am not familiar with the English conventions... In German we would write "Dear Lady, Dear Gentleman" ... Tell me how things go in England... Thanks in advance!

As you will probably be writing to the manager then the correct start to you letter would be
Dear sir/Madam
and address the envelope to
The Manager,
(bank address)
PS. In England we would also write firms name and address at the bottom left hand side of the page.
You could always write the position of the person you are writing to as the first line of the banks address on the bottom left of the page.
Or better still why not ring the bank and ask for the name of the person you wish to write to.

There are two ways, "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam" although the second one seems less personal in my opinion. Good luck with your letter writing!!!

first of all, i think that is totall awesome taht you came here from germany. but in America, we usually write what the name of the bank is.
Dear "name of bank"
blah, blahblahalkdjljkhsdlhfoiewutlkdfsjhglksdoskldfjglk alksdjfljldsajflk, fafjgklrjtiowuretiojfdgjriotu, and so on.
Usually, you have 3 body paragraphs, depending on what you're writing about. And then you end with a closing.
Sincerely,
"your signature" (in cursive)
"your name" (printed)

You can star your letter with Dear Sir/Madam
and when you end the letter you finish with
Yours faithfully.
Hope this helps
