who would name thier child Speed?

My great-great-grandfather's first name was Speed. My research on that branch of our family tree stops with Speed's father, who has been difficult to trace. Stories from older family members who actually remember Speed (he died in the 1940s) say that Speed's father and grandparents came to the US from somewhere in Ireland.

So here's a theory: Whatever his first name actually was, to American ears it sounded like "speed" and that's what was written down on an official record somewhere.

Or ... maybe his parents just liked the sound.

Who named their child Speed? Is it Jeff Gordon? That's not fair to the poor kid.
