UC Berkeley or UC Davis??

Prestige means a lot less then most people will let in. IMHO I would give it about a 3 on a 1 to 10 scale. Top academics, value etc I would all give a 10 to. So do a little matrix and figure out which school has the best overall score.

I must also add the first poster IMHO is wrong. Having conducted more job interviews than I can recall, I can assure you name means very little. Why? Because it is not just academics that gets you a job - it is the interview and your application. They invariably pick the best applicant - school attended grades earned etc hardly ever come into it.

Even the notion that a prestige degree unlocks doors and leads to higher earnings has been challenged. A 1999 study by Alan B. Krueger of Princeton and Stacy Dale of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation found that students who were admitted to both selective and moderately selective colleges earned the same no matter which they attended. The study suggested that the motivation and drive of the student mattered more than the college.

I'm a transfer student who has been admitted to both Cal and Davis. This should be an easy and obvious choice, I should choose Cal. But I'm absolutely torn between the 2 schools, I feel like I'm in a lose lose situation and that I would regret not going to the other school.

BERKELEY is BEST unless: 1. You think you want to move from molecular biology into oeneology. (Davis is #1 in wine, worldwide) 2. You need a smaller, less frenetic atmosphere to succeed. (Berkeley has more students, more classes, more professors and... admitedly, many extremely LARGE classes, particularly in mandatory entry subjects like Chem 1, Math 1 and California History. 3. You really like hot weather - the Valley is a lot hotter than the Berkeley hills 4. Choices and diversity make you nervous - Berkeley draws from a broader, more international student base, has more diversity of outside activities. 5. You hate the urban environment - Davis is a charming town; Berkeley is a city.

Honestly, I think you should set aside all the prestige, high scores, etc. for a moment and go with your gut feeling. Based on what you said, you seem like you would pick Davis if Cal's reputation wasn't an issue. You're right...getting higher grades,etc. would be a lot easier/less stressful at Davis, and not only that, but the level of competition is not at a crazy high as it is at cal. Since you want to apply to pharmacy school later on, it's important to maintain a high grade point average....and actually I think it would look more impressive if you manage to get a 4.0 at Davis, then say, a 3.5 at Cal.....you wouldn't automatically be forgiven for receiving a lower gpa at a slightly more prestigious school. Oh, and btw, Davis is a great school too....so choose the school that you would feel happier attending, not the school that has the more famous name

Seriously dude? I stopped reading after the first question mark. No offense but Berkeley is clearly going to shape your future in a way that you can't even picture. Location? If that is a factor ok. Other than that, I'm sorry but Cal Berkeley is hands down one of the best schools in the world and if you get admitted in to it, then you must take the opportunity and run w/it. Trust me name mean s EVERYTHING!!

ok, your right, cal is more competitive and harder and blah blah blah. But thats college. Davis is a pretty hard school too and no matter where you go you will be studying really hard, so why choose another school just because its a "little" easier? pharmacy school is competitive and showing that you succeeded and did well at BERKELEY would be a plus! go to cal! or else you'll really regret it

As you say -- the choice is obvious. Why are you even considering Davis over Berkeley?

if you want to be a pharmacist, go to brekeley, itll be easier to get into a decent pharm D. program out of a big name school like cal than it will for davis. There are only a few really excellent pharmD programs in the country and theyll want high scorers from good schools in their program. plus location matters, its supposed to be an experience- going to college.
