Native English speakers please... toward vs. towards?

Are really the same and their difference is just the matter of being American and British English or they're different in meaning too?

They're very similar in the United States (I don't know about Great Britain). They both indicate a "destination", sometimes geographically, sometimes in a decision making process, sometime in an attitude, etc.

    For example:

Her attitude towards me has changed

Her attitude toward me has changed (The same thing, you will hear them both in the US)

I'm leaning towards voting for McCain

I'm leaning toward voting for McCain

You need to go toward Main Street to get to Elm.

You need to go towards Main Street to get to Elm.

The only real difference I've had commented on by English professors is that, generally, when speaking of a geographical direction they prefer to see "toward". When referring to decisions/attitudes, they prefer to see "towards".

I don't think there is a widely accepted "rule" in general in America though!

There is no difference between [toward] and [towards], and both are used by both British and American speakers.

Toward making a better future for Mankind, one should think towards Progress.

I hope that illustrates the possible usage?

Language is quite fluid, actually; and it isn't strictly "American" or "Brit", really.

    But then, I'm no Expert.

    Peace.

Practically interchangeable in both idioms. in british a slight distinction is used "towards" being favoured for the abstract ie. "towards democracy" as against " toward the north". Just use "toward" as it is the more common usage.

As an American, I'd say they are pretty much interchangeable.
