I have a problem with my computer. See details below. I need some advice.?
Here is my problem: I recently got married and I want to use my wife's computer, but I need to get my files off my old computer. My computer's OS is Windows 98 SE. I tried to use a flash drive to get the files off my computer but no matter what I did (including getting a special driver from the manufacturer of the flash drive) I could not get the flash drive to work.
Since this alternative failed, what I am planning to do is to take out my hard drive in my Windows 98 SE computer, set it to slave, and temporarily install it in a computer with Windows XP in the hopes that I can get my working files off the drive. That is the plan--will this work? Any constructive help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It will absolutely work! I have my old Win98 harddrive slaved in my XP Pro machine. It doesnt take anytime at all to access and retrieve the files i need from the slave drive.

Yes this will work. I have helped recover items and files for others doing the same thing. Just remember to connect the master drive to the last IDE cable slot.
Also, for your old computer, check to make sure that the usb ports are operational. Many machines that are old have an option in the bios that activates/de-activates the usb ports. If your battery for the CMOS is going, the system will reset to factory settings, which have the usb ports de-activated. This might save you some time.

Should work fine, just make sure that you set the jumpers correctly for the brand of drives that you have, remember also that windows 98 ran on FAT32 and XP is NTFS, so if you transfer alot of files , it may take a good long time to complete due to the convert process

Do you have a CD-Rom Drive? You could just transfer the files on CD. If you have access to an ftp site, you could also store the files there and download them on the new machine. I'm not sure if your plan will work, as I've never tried anything like that. Good Luck!!!

that actually will work.
Another alternative would be to use an ethernet cross over cable (specially wired network cable - Fry's, Best Buy or Circuit City would have it) and connect the two computers directly together through the ethernet connector plug on the back of each machine. DO NOT use a regualr network cable it may casue damage you must use a cross over cable when connecting two computers together in this manner.

Best solution is to install hdd in new comp, then copying via usb, copying will go much much faster, this is important if you have much data to transfer, it will work! Also you need to check boot priority in bios, you don't want to boot from old hdd! Good luck! If you need more help ask me on pvt!
