What is the language used or teached at School?

English is the language of our educational system. It is also the language of our government and commerce.

In the Visayas, for instance, school kids learn their 3Rs in English. However, it is not unusual for teachers to use both English and the local dialect in their lectures/teaching methods. If it would mean that the kids would better grasp today's lessons, then teachers do occasionally use the local dialect.

Likewise, we do have subjects taught in Pilipino (our national language). These are Balarila (Grammar) and Panitikan (Literature) - after all, we have to know our very own rich language and our arts and culture.

English is commonly used in all school levels in the Philippines, especially in private schools, science high schools, colleges, and Universities... it is the medium of instruction... English is used in subjects like English Language, Math, Science, Music, Arts, PE, Health, and others... while Filipino language is commonly used in: Filipino Language and History... Both Spanish and Arabic are used as auxiliary languages in the Philippines...

while Tagalog, other native dialects, and other foreign languages are used in/out the campus, during recess time, lunch time, free-time, or dismissal...

many schools offer foreign languages... mostly in Manila...

it depends on the subject.

in elementary and high school: english, science and mathematics are taught in english. sometimes, to better explain things, the teacher would explain it in their native dialect (like in my case, akeanon). i remember too that we used to have an english only policy in such subjects although this was not religiously followed.

HEKASI (heograpiya, kasaysayan at sibika), filipino, EPP (edukasyong pantahanan at pangkabuhayan) were taught in filipino.

in college: i obtained my college degree from the university of the philippines and we had a choice on the language that the subject was taught. for example, there's communication for english enthusiasts. its counterpart is komunikasyon which is taught in filipino. humanities is taught in english and so is history while humanidades and kasaysayan (their counterparts) were taught in filipino.

also, it's interesting that in UP, some math and sciences concepts were translated into filipino.

Several teaching method involves english as the primary medium and filipino as medium coinciding with english,. However, in some provinces that have their own language or dialect, sometimes they mix them all up for the student to really understand and appreciate the lessons.

In Luzon, in private schools and universities, in the strictest sense, the primary language is English.

You only get to speak Tagalog, if its time for the Filipino subject and during break time. :-)

it's a combination of the filipino language and english all throughout the education system. about 80% of the books in elementary and high school are in english. for college, almost 100% of books are in english, mostly reprints of US-published textbooks

i went to elementary and high school in visayas (bacolod) and most subjects are taught in english with the exception of History and Filipino subjects which are taught in Tagalog.

national languagew/c is Filipino and International language w/c is English...Those are the languages and subject that needs to be teach in every school.
