Install Security Camera in Apartment Window?

Somebody broke into our 2nd story apartment and stole a few items. I suspect the thug friends of a teenage neighbor but can't prove it. To prevent this from happening again, can I put a security camera in the window of my apartment with a "Smile, you are on Camera" sign to keep track who walks up the stairs to my apartment?

Do I need permission from the landlord to do this, even though the camera will be inside my apartment?

The landlord won't do ANYTHING to help us, because she is afraid to be called a racist if she confronts the neighbors.

Update:

I live in Los Angeles.

We do not know the state or city in which you live, and these facts are important to give you information about your options. Therefore, we can provide only two general rules:

    (1) Yes, you have the legal right generally to record public places from inside your premises. Thus, if the corridor is for your and your neighbors' use, the general rule is that you may record the corridor.

    (2) You should consider consulting an attorney about your landlord's failure to protect you. There are at least two legal principles which you attorney will consider: the duty of the landlord to prevent nuisances and to provide security against known dangers. If you have put your landlord on proper notice, then your landlord may herself be required legally to reimburse your losses and to install a better security system.

If you cannot afford an attorney, then call your local bar association and ask for a referral to a "free or low-cost legal clinic which specializes in landlord-tenant law."

    Hope this helps.

Why don't you put a hidden camera and say nothing. Some of the cameras you can open up and insert it into something else like a teddy bear, toy, flower vase, etc. Be creative. Most of them you can open up with a regular screw driver. If this happens again, you now have evidence of who did it and let the police take care of things. By putting a sign outside may escalate the situation.

You can also purchase window alarms. I've seen them at home depot, dollar stores, walmart for 5 dollars for a ten pack. Put them on all your windows. You don't need to blow this out of proportion. Don't escalate this incident to something that may cause you harm or be in danger. People are retards these days and they dont need to be provoked.

    Good Luck to you

If you are doing this on your own, I would suggest you have an attorney advise you as to the requirements for posting notice of cameras and or securing permission from other tenants as you may unknowingly be violating some privacy laws.

Put a small camera that films the inside of the apartment. You don't need permission to film your own apartment.
