Because the people in the U.S. rarely have dealings with speakers of other languages except Spanish. There is no reason to learn any other language because most of the world learns English now. They have to in order to compete in this global economy.

The U.S. is pretty isolated compared to Europe. You have a bunch of tiny countries connected on one land mass. We don't. I can drive for three days and still be in the United States. So, unless we plan on going to Europe frequently or some other foreign country to live in, we would forget any language we learned anyway because it would never get used. I do know some Spanish and took two years of French in high school, but like I said, I have forgotten a lot of it because there's no opportunity to speak it with anybody.

Unfortunately or fortunately, however you look at it, we already know the language that we need to know to compete in today's job market, which is English. You learned Danish probably as your primary language but then learned English because it's necessary to know in this day and age. If you'd been born a native English speaker, you would have no need to learn Danish, would you?

I know it sounds arrogant, but that's just the way things are. We are not close to other countries like Italians or the Dutch, etc. Most countries in Europe are the size of one of our states.
