Liquid antibiotics a day or two after expiry date?

I'm just about finished with a bottle of liquid antibiotics and it expires today. I have about 3 or so doses left. Will the medication still work if I take it after? (I missed a few doses, so I'm a little late) but it's not like it'll just stop working, it'll just start to lose potency, right?

You may finish the doses you have. Usually that's what I recommend if someone misses a dose. It may lose potency after the expiration date and may taste different. Depending on the medication, you should keep it refrigerated. But, medications are not like time bombs that on the expiration date will stop or something. With the liquid is more delicate since it required mixing and are less stable than other dosage forms. But, since you just have a few more doses, I think you should finish the treatment. Next time, don't skip doses. Hope you'll feel better!

That is a myth, Your antibiotic will still work. I only know this because just a couple of weeks ago, there was a segment on the Today show and a doctor was talking about expiration dates. She said that the medicine are perfectly fine to take. She said the only reason an expiration date was put on the bottle is because the pharmaceutical companies want you to get more. I use to think and in fact was taught, that you shouldn't use them, but after listening to this doctor, I see things differently. Take them, they won't hurt you. The one interviewing the doctor, Meridith, said she had a bottle of aspirin that expire 1 yr ago but took it anyway, then wondered if she would get sick. Of course she didn't' and the MD told her that she herself keeps all over the counter meds no matter how old they are and they still work. The same goes for prescriptions. Hope this makes you feel better about taking them, What better advice can you have than from a doctor who also continues to take expired meds.

Call your pharmacist. Missing doses of antibiotics may allow the 'germs' that are hardest to kill to survive and prosper (at your expense). Medications often come with fact sheets that explain how to get back on track when a dose is missed. Always read such instructions to get best results. Missing a few doses in a row may be more important than an accidental miss. The outcome may depend on the infection and the antibiotic in use. If necessary, the pharmacist will suggest you contact your doctor.

Finish your antibiotics. You are likely to be ok. The shelf life expiration date on the bottle doesn't exactly match the biological expiration date...i.e the drug may still be working but no guarantee.Liquids don't store as well as solids.

BTW Which crap pharmacist gave you antibiotics which were due to expire?? Antibiotics are generally for about a week. You should really raise the issue with the pharmacist as i think it's unacceptable.....unless you have dragged on your course for several years or months??

  • I highly suggest you call a pharmacist (perhaps the one who filled the prescription). I always do this when in doubt and have always gotten very consise information and an no judgement. Also, you don't even need to tell them who's calling if you don't want to. Pharmacists are a source for a wealth (ignore the pun) of information as they HAVE to and are REQUIRED to stay current on all pharmacalogical news, changes, new meds, etc. Please don't take chances with your health...give a pharmacist a call. Good luck

gosh, that is really inadvisable. firstly, you should not be mssing any of your doses, that really reduces the effectiveness of the antibiotics.

antibiotics contain live bacteria, so taking them after the expiry date is definitely not a wise decision.

so, what i'm telling you is NOT to take the antibiotics after the expiry date.
