Nobody is born believing in anything; children believe whatever they are taught to believe because they don't know any better. What you believe depends mostly on where and in what time period you live, not on the mandates of some supernatural genie speaking to you in a dream. Thus, when you turn to atheism--lack of belief in any god, gods, spirituality, or the supernatural--you are, in a sense, returning to the state in which you were as a newborn baby.
However, there are many atheists who are spiritual--that is, they don't believe in a personal God such as Yahweh, but they do attend a Unitarian Universalism church, meditate, practice Buddhism, or may even believe in angels or other spirit beings. It is not always an either-or situation.

Anyone that goes against the customs of their time and place will show certain characteristics. Usually, there will be a willingness to follow their own path; a willingness to look at arguments that their society ignores; and a need to be convinced of their beliefs rather than accpeting whatever they are told. This is true whether it is an atheist in a theistic society of a theist in an atheistic society.
Nobody is born with a belief in a deity. We are taught to believe as children and either learn to accept or reject what we have been told. Atheists typically find the usual answers given by religion to be unsatisfying.

First off, we are certainly not all born as believers of one faith or another - we are taught to believe by our families and/or the societies we live in. A child who is taught that Faeries exist will believe that Faeries exist. If that same child is taught Faeries don't exist, s/he will not believe in them. Same with god.
Secondly, I don't think most non-believers "turn" to atheism (as if it were something). Atheism is a lack of belief. Just as I assume you lack belief in Baal, Zeus, Santa Claus and The Easter Bunny, atheists lack belief in (primarily) a super-natural (meaning beyond nature) personal god.
Beyond that, the only thing I can really see atheists having in common is a willingness to see things as they really are, an appreciation of logic and rational thinking.
Oh, one more thing: if you (or anyone else) could give us actual proof that this amazing super-natural being exists, we'd be more than happy to become "believers". Unfortunately, there is no proof and no logical argument that covers that lack of that proof, so we go on disbelieving.

Nobody is born a believer. Instead we are born into situations of unavoidable indoctrination.
But I have noticed that some atheists tend to drink milk. You should investigate the correlation.

I disagree we are born believers. We are born atheists. We are taught to believe. We are all unique individuals. We tend to be well educated, smart, and independent. Reason and lack of objective evidence is why most of us are atheists. Lack of evidence and rationality in faith would be the root cause.

We are not born with faith. Faith is a learned trait.
The only guaranteed similar characteristic shared among my atheist peers is this: we are atheists.

We are all born atheists, actually. People have to be indoctrinated to become religious. (For example, imagine a boy raised by wolves. That boy will not be taught about gods, so he will be an atheist by definition.)
I became an atheist because I found all arguments for Christianity to be unconvincing and mostly very childish. When Christians still think Anselm was brilliant, you know there's a problem.

Born believers?? I would say intelligence is the chief characteristic defining an atheist, especially after reading you inane question.

We are all born atheist. You don't need to search for the root cause. I'll tell you. There is no evidence for it, plus there is a proof that the biblical god does not exist.

how can a person be born one faith or another? I'm very confused, had always considered religion very personal - and a matter of choice - where did you learn otherwise?
