What could be the cause: I cannot select any gear?
The cluch pedle feels normal, this suggests to me that it could be a problem with the transmission?
Nate: it is hydraulic. There is no sound from the gearbox or clutch when trying to select a gear, all behaves as normal except when you release the clutch you go nowhere.

details, car type, motor, trans etc. does it grind when you try to put it in gear. any of these could help. if it has a hydraulic clutch, check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder. it should be to the right of the brake booster. if its full, it could be the throw out bearing which is the part that disengages the clutch. if it's the throw out bearing, difficulty of install varies depending on type of car

Gear synchros???
If you really try and it still won't go, you're kind of stuck, you need to get a new box, or at least a gearbox rebuild and replace the synchros
Maybe easier to just get another gearbox out of a scrap yard, would be the cheapest option unless you're mechanically minded and could do the rebuild.

It sounds like you sheared a CV joint on a 1/2 shaft. Have someone watch the drive axle while you hold your foot on the brake pedal, in gear w/engine running. You will probably see a shaft turning without the wheel moving. Replace that 1/2 shaft with a rebuilt unit.

sounds like your clutch is shot and needs to be replaced, possibly the flywheel also
